Yesterday brought a bit of a whirlwind of Phillies managerial news. First, it was reported that Alex Cora, the presumed favorite to land the job after he initially turned down Dave Dombrowski’s overtures in late April, spurned the Phillies again. Then it was reported that the Phillies managerial search may be over before it ever really started, as it’s possible that they may turn back towards interim manager Don Mattingly.
It was one of the worst kept secrets in baseball that Dombrowski coveted Cora
and practically everyone assumed that deal would get done very quickly after the Phillies finished playing. However, here we sit exactly a week after the Phillies were eliminated, and we’re essentially right back to where we were in April with the Phillies missing out on their top option and perhaps “settling” for Mattingly. It is obviously still early in the offseason, so things can change on all fronts. Perhaps Cora changes his mind, and this was all a leverage play. Maybe the Phillies realize there are more people that can manage a baseball team besides just Cora and Mattingly. Regardless, the question of who will be manning the dugout the next time the Phillies take the field is still very much unanswered.
So, who do YOU think will be the Phillies manager in 2027?
