Welcome to the FC Bayern Campus Round Up, where the matches of Bayern Munich’s U-17, U-19 and U-23 squads are recapped, line ups are provided and the highlights to each match are hyperlinked on top of their
respective score lines. Information on the U-23, U-19 and U-17 matches is provided by the official FC Bayern website here, here and here, respectively. If you wish to learn more about the format of the U-17 and U-19’s youth leagues, you can find more info here. The U-17s did not release any highlights this week. Additionally, none of these matches can be viewed in full length without an FCBayernTV subscription. Without further ado, here is the round up:

What can be said that has not been said already? Bayern II suffered yet another defeat, their 5th in 12 matches, losing 3-4 at home to FV Illertissen in what was quite a comical match. If one takes a look at the highlights, the goals generally consist of bizarre deflections and comical own goals. The same sense of comedy seemed to permeate the match, with Bayern’s defense typically unable to stop the visitor’s counters. Meanwhile, the Bavarians themselves did not manage to create enough out of open play. Ultimately, two of the three goals were set piece goals and the other was a bizarre own goal. Bajung Darboe, the big January signing from LAFC, endured an energetic but frustrating performance in his first ever start for the U-23s.
And still, Bayern were 2-1 up at half time. Even after Illertissen equalized in the 56th minute, they got a red card in the 65th minute through Max Zeller. Poor guy scored an own goal and got a red card in the same match. Still, instead of taking advantage, Bayern would somehow manage to concede two more goals WITH A MAN ADVANTAGE. This was a spectacularly poor performance from a team that has made poor performances an unfortunate habit. How much longer can this continue before Bayern decide something has to change?
The U-23s are, after all, just 6 points off of the relegation spots (though they have two games in hand). From the goal of promotion early in the season, for now they need to focus on not getting pulled into a relegation fight.
Bayern U-19 2-1 1859+1 Munich U-19, Matchday 9
Bayern lineup (with subs): Ruland – Wijks, Kiala, Pavlić (64. Schäfer), Ofli – Santos, Schmid, Olychenko (64. Snip) – Chemwor (79. Lambe), Gashi (64. Codjo-Evora), Mike (79. Egwuatu).
Goals: 1:0 Wijks (23.), 1:1 Fiedler (51.), 2:1 Cardozo (75.).
Unavailable players: Oluwaseyi Wilson, Michel Ekodi
Position: 1., 22 points
Fortunately, Bayern’s U-19s managed a better result than the U-23s, overcoming 1859+1 Munich 2-1. Having lost to their city rivals three weeks ago, winning this match was a must and fortunately they delivered, also sealing progression to the next phase of league play along the way. In general, Bayern were the better team and created the best chances, though the high line did lead to some serious issues. The speed and power of both Chivano Wijks and Cassiano Kiala was on full display here in combating 1859+1’s long passes in behind the defense, with Wijks even using his incredible physical gifts for a jaw dropping goal to open the scoring. How he manages to beat the defender to the ball is beyond this writer.
Maycon Cardozo had to make do with a spot on the bench after scoring a crucial hat trick last week, for whatever reason, but he came off the bench to bag the winner today. Remember, the Brazilian did not come through the academy the regular way but through the FC Bayern World Squad, which is really only intended to be a promotional gimmick. Cardozo had to deal with some injury issues after joining last January and missed nearly the entire first half of the year, but he is really starting to blossom. Could he be a candidate for the first team? It is too early for that kind of discussion, but seeing someone make the first team through the World Squad would be truly bizarre.
Bayern U-17 1-5 Sandhausen U-17, Matchday 8
Bayern lineup (with subs): Podar-Stiube – Ajayi (65. Hentcho Nseke), Pucci (46. Maspimby), Pavic, Horvath (46. El Allali) – El-Chaar (65. Babl), Schaff, Zogaj (46. Danioko), Horosczcak– von Taube, Asomo
Goals: 0:1 Sahin (1.), 0:2 Sahin (26.), 0:3 Sahin (33.), 0:4 Sahin (56.), 0:5 Stadler (86.),1:5 Babl (90.+1)
After winning all seven of their first matches with a +24 goal difference, Bayern’s U-17s lost their first game of the season by being crushed 5-1 at home vs Sandhausen. It does not matter to the table, as Bayern have already sealed progression to the next round of league play. But it is a truly bizarre result.
