No. 9 ranked TCU Soccer picked up a third straight win with a 1-0 victory on the road over Arizona this past Thursday. The Horned Frogs played an excellent defensive game and Emma Yolinsky provided the only goal from either team. TCU moved into sole possession of first place in the Big 12 with two conference games remaining.
An early yellow card on Arizona in the third minute set up the first shot on goal of the game by Morgan Brown, which was saved
by the goalkeeper. AJ Hennessey recorded a shot in the eighth minute before a shot from Arizona missed high. In the 13th minute, Yolinsky gave the Frogs a 1-0 lead off of an assist from Cameron Patton. Patton made a nice cross into the box that Yolinsky deposited into the back of the net with a header.
Arizona looked for an equalizer in the following minutes with a shot on goal in the 14th and 15th minutes, both of which were saved by Olivia Geller for the Horned Frogs. After a shot in the 26th minute from Arizona, both defenses settled in, as neither team attempted a shot for the next 14 minutes. Arizona missed a shot high and right in the 40th minute. It was a defensively dominated first half on both sides as the teams combined for three shots on goal total through the first 45 minutes.
Geller was tested early by the Arizona offense with a shot on goal right after halftime, which she handled. The Horned Frogs then had a pair of corner kicks that were defended well by the Wildcats in the 51st and 53rd minutes. The second half was another defensive battle with few chances for either side as the next shot attempt came in the 69th minute when Filippa Hoegild narrowly missed a goal for the Horned Frogs. Yolinsky came close to scoring her second of the game in the 82nd minute with a shot on goal that was saved by the Arizona keeper.
Sydney Becerra then nearly put the game away in the 83rd minute with a shot on goal that was saved by the Wildcats. The Horned Frogs did well to limit Arizona’s offense the rest of the way and closed out a 1-0 victory. TCU continues to showcase its ability to close out tight games with their ninth one goal win of the season. Geller was solid in goal for the Frogs and TCU found a way to win on the road in a low scoring, low chance game.
The Frogs will stay in Arizona for their next game as they are set to take on Arizona State on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Tempe as they look to maintain their spot at the top of the Big 12.
