The New England Patriots’ offensive line has taken a handful of hits early this season.
On Sunday, that came in the second quarter when veteran right guard Greg Van Roten, who drew the start for Mike Onwenu (injured reserve), left the game early with a thigh injury.
He was replaced by Walter Rouse, not Ben Brown, who was the team’s top interior backup last season.
“Walt has been working there. We felt confident that was the plan going in, that Ben Brown would be the center and then the first left guard
in. That’s where he had been working,” head coach Mike Vrabel explained.
Rouse allowed a team-high four pressures and a sack in relief, potentially opening the door for Brown to take over at right guard moving forward.
“It’s good to have Ben back healthy. I’m sure he will help us; he’ll probably have to help us this week,” Vrabel said. “I thought Walter had a few mistakes, but he competed and will have to improve. I’m sure Ben will be a part of that process going forward, and we will see where Greg Van Roten is here after a few more tests.”
Brown started four games for the Patriots last season at left guard and signed a two-year, $6.6 million extension in December. He injured his knee this preseason and missed the regular-season opener.
Rouse, meanwhile, switched from tackle to guard this summer with the Minnesota Vikings. The Patriots acquired him via trade for a late-round draft-pick swap during roster cuts.
