Free agent projections are out, and so it is that time again — time for the annual “should the Rangers sign This Player” polls.
Today, we are looking at starting pitcher Merrill Kelly.
Kelly is a righthander
who turned 37 last month, and has had a strange professional journey, getting drafted in the 10th round out of Arizona State in 2010 by the Rays, getting released by them in 2014, and then spending four seasons pitching for the SK Wyverns in the KBO. He signed with the D-Backs in the 2018-19 offseason and was part of their rotation from 2019 until the trade deadline in 2025, when he was shipped to the Rangers for Kohl Drake, Mitch Bratt and David Hagaman.
Over at Fangraphs, Ben Clemens projects Kelly at one year, $21 million as the #17 free agent in their top 50, while the median crowdsource has Kelly at 2 years, $32 million. At ESPN, Kiley McDaniel has Kelly at #22, and projects him at 2 years, $35 million. Keith Law has Kelly at #15 on his list, and says he’d give Kelly one year at $8-12 million.
We will use the McDaniel projection for our poll.
Would you want the Rangers to sign Merrill Kelly to a 2 year, $32 million deal?
