Devastating news rocked German national team supporters on Friday when it was announced that FC Bayern wonderkid Lennart Karl was injured and will consequently miss out on playing in his first World Cup this summer. Former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann was then charged with the important decision of how to call up as his replacement.
Nagelsmann named RB Leipzig talent Assan Ouédrago, who had an excellent debut for the national team months ago when he scored just seconds into his debut. Ouédrago has
missed the last friendly window in March due to an injury but is now fit and ready to go this summer.
Despite the talent Ouédrago has shown, this decision has been met with scrutiny with fans quick to cite that Ouédrago doesn’t feel like a direct replacement for the Bayern Munich star. With Tom Bischof and Said El Mala still sitting at home, would it have made more sense to give El Mala the call as a more direct replacement in attack?
With Gnabry and Karl both out, Germany will start to feel some depth in attack fading away, with Sané and Leweling likely to play a larger role in the coming weeks. Was this the right decision? Let us know in the comments!
