Kyle Karros, Cole Carrigg, and the Power of Friendship

If you’ve watched any Colorado Rockies game over the past two months, you’ll have seen third baseman Kyle Karros and outfielder Cole Carrigg on the field together.

Both were drafted in 2023 – Carrigg in the Competitive Balance B round and Karros in the fifth round – and worked their way up through the minors at nearly the same pace. Karros broke through to the majors a little bit before Carrigg, but the two were reunited in June.

And, you may have noticed, the two are awfully good friends:

But they

didn’t cross paths until the MLB draft, where they hit it off almost instantly.

“Right after the draft, there were only a few of us going to get MRI’s and stuff, and a lot of weird and different things that I didn’t know we had to do,” Carrigg recalled. “But he was always in my group, and we just hit it off.”

And Karros noticed Carrigg’s personality almost immediately.

“He was definitely a unique character,” Karros said. “I think it’s kind of a yin-and-yang dynamic with us, but I think we bonded pretty well on the field and off the field. I think our personalities complement each other well. So yeah, we were pretty close off the rip.”

Carrigg’s first impression of Karros?

“He seemed like a good guy, and we got along really well to kick things off,” Carrigg said. “We were pretty good buddies right away.”

And that relationship has blossomed over the years, especially as they moved through the minor leagues together.

“That same year, we went to Fresno together and finished the Low-A season there – same plane flights and everything,” Carrigg recalled. “We got called up the same day and went to Spokane together. We stayed there the entire year. We went to Hartford together, and then he moved to Triple-A and then the big leagues later in the year. And then that was kind of the only time we had split up since then, and now we’re back doing it again. We spend so much time with each other. There’s nothing really to do. It just happens.”

Karros, however, has fostered the relationship more intentionally – both with Carrigg and his other teammates along the way.

“I think I’ve viewed one of my roles on any team I’m part of is to help with the dynamic,” he said. “I think that comes with being in a position of a leader, which I was in the minor leagues, and I hope to be at some point at the major-league level.

“But I think it’s always been kind of a task of mine to foster relationships and curate a team dynamic,” he continued, “and with him, he’s definitely a very, very strong personality, and I’ve definitely looked at it as one of my jobs as a leader in this organization is to be a mentor for him at times. He’s a mentor for me at times, but I always kind of help him out and we’ve leaned on one another as we came up together.”

Since winning the third-base job outright in spring training, Karros struggled a little bit out of the gate in 2026. Through June 8, he batted .225/.329/.664 with 11 doubles, three home runs, 17 RBI and two stolen bases. He struck out 49 times (23%) and walked 28 times (13.1%), good for a wRC+ of just 75.

Enter Cole Carrigg.

Since Carrigg’s debut on June 9, Karros is slashing .310/.399/.525 with nine doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 27 RBI, and three stolen bases. He has struck out 32 times (17.5%) and walked 19 times (10.4%), good for a wRC+ of 139.

Carrigg, meanwhile, is slashing .292/.375/.489 with 14 doubles, three triples, five home runs, 30 RBI and seven stolen bases in 10 attempts. He has struck out 42 times (20.1%) and walked 23 times (11%), good for a wRC+ 121.

Perhaps it’s just a coincidence that Karros’ performance has skyrocketed since being reunited with his friend, but he doesn’t see it that way.

“I think part of it is just being up here longer and being more comfortable,” he said. “I’ve made some adjustments here and there, but I think there’s definitely something to be said about it.”

But he does think stepping into a leadership role as more young guys, including Carrigg, have been called up has helped his game.

“I’ve always been a leader on most teams I play for, and I think that allows me to be at my best,” Karros said. “And I think being one of the younger guys on the team, I don’t think I really felt a responsibility to lead. But then once we’ve started to get more young guys in the mix – Cole being one of them – I think I kind of get out of my own head in a way and take others as my responsibility, and that allows me to be at my best on the field. Even if I’m having a rough day, I still see my value in being there for Cole and my teammates, and that’s definitely been exemplified since he’s been up.”

And Carrigg takes notes of how Karros carries himself.

“Not that you would ever tell, but seeing how he goes about not having great games and how even-keeled he is,” Carrigg said. “That definitely is something I aspire to be better at, and I think he just leads by example in that way. He would never tell me otherwise to do anything different, but I see it. I try to be a little more like him in that sense, and hopefully I would say my energy rubs off on him and he likes to play with a little more edge, as well.”

Manager Warren Schaeffer sees their bond, as well, and how it translates on and off the field.

“I think it translates enormously on the field and off the field,” he said, after an audible laugh. “It’s a piece of work, for sure. Those guys are hilarious. They love each other — it’s very evident. And I do think that on the field, they bring the most out of each other.

“They’ve been good friends for a long time,” he continued. “They played in the minor leagues together and really bonded, but they push each other and you don’t always see that with two guys like that who are close. They criticize each other and push each other in that way – just how clubhouse culture is. But it’s fun to watch, and the boys love it.”

He also sees how contagious a strong bond like that could be to others in the clubhouse.

What happens in the clubhouse is a big part of what happens on the field,” Schaeffer said. “It’s a day-long affair with everybody in there. We spend so much time together, and if there’s people in there that hate each other, it’s going to translate on the field. It always does, no matter how good of a player you are.”

But since Karros and Carrigg have spent so much time together, what are their favorite baseball moments?

“Early on, [Carrigg] made a play in Wrigley,” Karros said. “I was at third, he was in center, and he threw a guy out tagging from second. I think that one sticks out. We joked about it. We’ve made that play so many times in the minor leagues, and to do it at Wrigley was pretty sweet.”

And for Carrigg? He laughed while telling his story.

“We won the Northwest League Championship in High-A (in 2024) and the bases were loaded. We were tied in the bottom of the ninth, and Kyle got hit on the knob of the bat and sold it for a hit-by-pitch. The umpire got it wrong, and we walked it off.”

These teammates are a study in contrasts. Carrigg plays with his hair on fire and brings an edge to his game, while Karros is more of a steady presence.

But these two clearly feed off of each other and have made each other better.

As the wise sage Paula Abdul once put it, “Opposites attract.”

On the Farm

Triple-A: Oklahoma City Comets, Albuquerque Isotopes 0

Jack Mahoney made his third start for the Isotopes against the Comets (LAD). He lasted just 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

The first hit came to the leadoff batter, Alex Freeland, and the first walk came to the second batter, Zach Ehrhard, to put men on first and second to lead off the game. Luckily, he got Ryan Ward to pop out and James Tibbs III grounded into a 6-3 double play to end the inning.

Alek Thomas walked to lead off the second, and Noah Miller singled three batters later. The scoring came in the third, though, when Erhard walked again and then was driven home by a Ward two-run homer to put the Comets up 2-0. Those were the only runs allowed by Mahoney, but after walking Ehrhard for a third time in the fifth inning, he was lifted for Mark Manfredi, who immediately walked Ward.

In the sixth, Hyeseong Kim singled to lead off the inning and stole second, and was driven home by Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald drove in the fourth run in the seventh on another single, and Ward grounded into a double play that ended up scoring Chadwick Tromp in the eighth.

The Isotopes’ offense mustered six hits — two from Ryan Ritter and one apiece for Edouard Julien, Charlie Condon, Chad Stevens and Drew Avans. They also struck out 13 times and walked just three. Meanwhile, the Comets walked nine times and struck out just six

Double-A: Erie SeaWolves 5, Hartford Yard Goats 4

The Yard Goats fought back late, but it wasn’t enough. Through the first three innings, there were only two baserunners — one for each side. But the SeaWolves (DET) broke through in the fourth when Thayron Liranzo hit a solo homer to put the Wolves on the board. They tacked on three more runs in the fifth, when Roberto Campos doubled, Joe Campagna singled and then Seth Stephenson singled to score Campos. Woody Hadeen then walked, and Zyhir Hope singled to score Campagna and Stephenson.

The Goats finally got on the board in the seventh, when Braylen Wimmer doubled and was scored two batters later by Cole Messina. But all of the action came in the ninth.

Patrick Lee walked as the second batter of the inning and then stole second. Stephenson grounded out, but Lee took third. After he was ejected, Hadeen reached on a fielding error by Tevin Tucker, allowing Lee to score. Hadeen stole second and Hope walked, but then Liranzo popped out to short to end the threat.

In the Goats’ half, Jared Thomas kicked things off with a walk and them Wimmer singled. A wild pitch by Colin Fields allowed them both to advance, and then Messina smacked a three-run homer to put them within one. Skyler Messinger reached on an error by Liranzo, but then Tucker and Andy Perez flied out and struck out to end the rally.

The Goats offense mustered five hits — two by Dyan Jorge, two by Wimmer and one by Messina. They also only struck out four times and walked four more.

High-A: Spokane Indians 8, Everett AquaSox 7

Meanwhile, the Indians were able to outlast the AquaSox (SEA) in ten innings. It was a back-and-forth affair where the only innings without scoring from either team were the seventh and ninth.

The Indians got things started early when Roynier Hernandez singled, and then Tanner Thach was hit two batters later. Kelvin Hidalgo singled to score Hernandez. In the second, it was the AquaSox turn. Austin St. Laurent singled and then Anthony Donofrio homered two batters later to put them up 2-1. In the third, the Indians said “hold my beer” as Tommy Hopfe walked and Ethan Hedges homered to put the Indians up 3-2. In the fourth, they expanded their lead as Robert Calaz doubled to lead things off, Derek Bernard walked and Alan Espinal homered to push the lead to 6-2.

In the fifth, Aiden Taurek walked and was brought home by a Brandon Eike homer, 6-4. In the sixth, Korbyn Dickerson singled, Luke Stevenson walked and then Taurek singled to score Dickerson. The AquaSox tied things up in the eighth when Carter Dorighi was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and then Dickerson walked. Taurek walked two batters later, and a wild pitch scored Dorighi to tie the game. But then Clausen was intentionally walked and St. Laurent grounded into a double play to end the threat.

In the tenth, Hernandez doubled to score ghost runner Jacob Hinderleider, and then Thach doubled two batters later to score pinch runner Wilder Dalis. That proved to be the game winner, as the AquaSox were only able to plate one run in their half — a double by Eike to score Dickerson — making the final score 8-7.

Low-A: San Jose Giants 10, Fresno Grizzlies 9

Things got off to a hot start for the Fresno Grizzlies and San Jose Giants (SF), but things collapsed down the stretch. Ashly Andujar walked to lead things off and Carlos Renzullo singled right behind him. Two batters later, Jack Natili doubled to score Andujar and put the Grizzlies in front 1-0. Juan Martinez walked two batters later, and then Ronny Ugarte walked with the bases loaded to tack on another run.

In the bottom half, Luis Hernández singled and Lorenzo Meola doubled, then Jeremiah Jenkins reached on a fielding error to score Hernández and make the score 2-1. Things went quiet until the fourth, when Juan Martinez tripled to kick things off. Ugarte walked, then Cort MacDonald singled to score Martinez. Then, Sebastian Blanco attempted a sacrifice bunt that was fielded poorly by the pitcher, loading the bases instead. Two batters later, another run was scored by a bases-loaded walk from Carlos Renzullo. Then, Cristian Arguelles grounded out, but scored MacDonald.

In the fifth, Fresno scored again when Ugarte reached on a fielding error after Juan Martinez tripled. They tacked on another in the seventh when Jack Natili reached on a throwing error and advanced on a wild pitch, then Ryan Niedzwiedz singled to score Natili and run up the score 7-1. Another wild pitch two batters later allowed Niedzwiedz to advance to third, and then Ugarte hit a sacrifice fly to make it 8-1.

But then the eighth happened. Yanzel Correa entered to pitch and got Jeremiah Jenkins to ground out to third, but then the wheels started to fall off. Fernando Gonzalez walked and then three-straight singles made the score 8-2. Broedy Poppell struck out, but then Josuar Gonzalez tripled to score all three singles and make the score 8-5. In the ninth, Lorenzo Meola singled and Jenkins walked. Then, Austin Newton replaced Correa. He got Gonzalez to fly out, then Tanner Mally walked and Andy Polanco walked to score a run. Oliver Tejada then singled to tie things up 8-8.

In the tenth, a wild pitch allowed ghost runner Juan Martinez to advance to third. But Samir Chires got the first two batters out quickly before Blanco singled to score Martinez. In the bottom half, Newton got two quick strikeouts, but then walked Gonzalez and gave up an RBI single to Mally to tie things up again.

In the 11th, the Grizzlies were unable to score. But in the bottom half, a double and a single was all the Giants needed to walk things off 10-9.

In total, the Grizzlies mustered 10 hits, five walks and 14 strikeouts. And the Giants got 15 hits, eight walks and 12 strikeouts.
