Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal
attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.
None of the lead guards have played a minute in the preseason yet, and yet the Spurs are undefeated in the preseason. The Spurs showed a lot of heart on Wednesday night as Carter Bryant led the team to a last minute victory with a dominant performance in the last three minutes of the game after being pretty much invisible up to that point. Preseason wins don’t count in the standings, but it’s still a lot of fun for the fans to see the Silver and Black turn in a clutch performance with the game on the line, even though most of the starters were cheering on the team from the bench.
Tonight they face Will Hardy’s Utah Jazz, who have been tanking since the cold war ended (maybe a slight exaggeration). Even in the preseason, they seem to be keeping up that trend, with roughly half the team out tonight as they stumble into the 2025-2026 season. There are rumors that Lauri Markkanen may be available in a trade, but we won’t see him tonight, and it’s unlikely that the Spurs are willing to give up the kind of assets the Jazz would want to part with him. There’s a chance that Dylan Harper could be cleared to play tonight, which would set up a nice matchup of him against Ace Baily, Harper’s college teammate and fifth overall pick.
It’s just another exhibition game, but as always, it’s fun to watch the young Spurs play and especially see Victor Wembanyama work off the rust caused by missing the second half of last season. Let’s watch and hope for another win, which won’t count in the standings, but will help to improve the squad’s confidence as they transition from a losing team to a contender.
Game Prediction:
Victor Wembanyama will do something that no one has ever seen done on a basketball court. Twice. [To be fair, I could use this prediction for every game.]
