As people who keep up with WWE, either by watching or just hanging around the wrestle web, we know that the on-screen characters of Cody Rhodes and The Rock have a complicated relationship. Rocky did come back to take Rhodes’ spot at WrestleMania 40 (definitely in story and maybe in real life), then come back a year later for Cody’s “soul” in a still-unresolved thread from the brief John Cena heel turn arc around WrestleMania 41.
Like their program until The Final Boss took his current extended break
from WWE’s on-screen product, Rhodes sprinkles a lot of truth into this clip talking about their relationship from his Street Fighter promotional tour. This stop was to Mythical Kitchen to talk about his Last Meal.
“I think there’s just a huge amount of reality with what happened in WrestleMania 40 and him coming in and then me, him taking my thing away, and me taking it back, and him The Final Boss — which is one of the best characters and it’s really untapped that not only he ever done, ever did, but wrestling’s ever had.
“Our families have been linked for longer than people see, you know? There’s this, like a territorial tie between us to where I don’t think it was something that was ever discussed. He always was going to target her. They have a relationship. And then my mom and his mom have a relationship.
“A prime example — Hollywood Bowl does this unbelievable premiere for Moana in live action. And I come, which I’m always wondering why he invites me to these things because it’s like I’m the only one who gets invited, and are we going to fight? … Oh man, is he going to whip me with a weight belt here in front of a picture of Pua and Hei Hei…
“I was there, I wanted to see his mom. There’s just a fun relationship. His mother and as the matriarch of that family and everything that he’s built.
“But that’s the most complicated male relationship I have in my life.”
Now, as every article with my name on it reminds you, I have long thought too much about the alternate version of reality called pro wrestling. So this may just be rasslin blogger worked/shoot galaxy brain talking, but when you consider the histories of their families and the influence they have on the entire business/artform, I think there’s some truth to that last line.
What do you think, Cagesiders?
