If we take the sheer volume of transfer rumors as any indication, then Roma’s top priority this silly season is clear: Gasperini wants himself a new left-winger. From the stomach-churning Mason Greenwood rumors to the what-are-they-waiting-for-they’re-going-to-lose-him-to-Milan Kerim Alajbegović links, the Giallorossi seemingly have a bevy of options to complement striker Donyell Malen.
Roma remains engaged in talks with the €55 million-rated Greenwood, but the Italian press has now linked the club
to another former Manchester United wonderkid and current Chelsea winger, Alejandro Garnacho. While there is some discrepancy over the current extent of this pursuit, Alfredo Pedulla confirms that the Giallorossi are indeed interested in the 22-year-old Argentine. For his part, Fabrizio Romano claims there has been no contact between Roma and Chelsea and that the Blues aren’t likely to make a decision until new manager Xabi Alonso gets a look at his new squad later this summer.
Garnacho, who recently celebrated his 22nd birthday, came up through the Atletico Madrid youth system before moving to Manchester United in 2021, making his senior debut as a 17-year-old the following spring. Since then, Garnacho has made 117 Premier League appearances, scoring 17 goals and providing 12 assists in approximately 6,600 minutes.
In terms of age and positional adaptability, Garnacho fits the Gasperini bill. Still, with a new manager on the Chelsea bench, not to mention the World Cup grinding silly season to a halt, we may not see any traction on this story for a few weeks.
