With Liverpool facing a defensive injury crisis and dealing with long-term question marks surrounding the fitness records of a number of their position players, including Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez, rumours emerged this month about an approach for Inter Milan 29-year-old right back Denzel Dumfries.
In the end, a move for the player didn’t go ahead, and plenty of eyebrows were raised given Dumfries’ age and the fact he’s only now working his way back from an ankle injury and isn’t expected to be ready
to play for at least a few more weeks. Apparently, though, the interest was real—and Inter didn’t appreciate it.
“We approached the window calmly because we do not have gaps to fill apart from Denzel Dumfries who is coming back from surgery,” noted Inter president Beppe Marotta. “For Dumfries there were phone calls made in an ill-advised way that only serve to destabilise our situation, so he will remain with us.”
It was always difficult to understand the rumoured interest, and additionally it seems it has only served to (seemingly unnecessarily) annoy Inter. Liverpool have since moved to complete a deal for Rennes centre half Jeremy Jacquet, though he won’t arrive until summer and the Reds remain thin at the back.
