On Saturday night, Arizona finally broke through into the win column. A win streak will have to wait for next weekend.
The Wildcats lost 11-2 to UConn on Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field, losing three of four to the Huskies to drop to 1-7 on the season. It is the worst start in school history.
Unlike the previous losses, which were all fairly close, this one got away from the UA quickly. Starting pitcher Collin McKinney only lasted two innings, allowing three runs including the first home run he’s
yielded with the Wildcats.
Freshman Jack Lafflam didn’t do any better, giving up three runs in 1.1 innings. Corey Kling, Benton Hickman and Andrew Jacobs followed, each allowing at least one run as the pitching staff issued nine walks and five hit by pitches in addition to 12 hits.
Arizona’s bats produced 12 hits, most this season, but only went 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position. The Wildcats stranded 13 runners.
Four UA batters had two hits including Tony Lira, who smoked his first career home 452 feet to center in the 5th and is hitting .382. Freshmen Cash Brennan and Caleb Danzeisen also had two hits apiece.
Arizona is off until Friday when it begins play in the Las Vegas Classic, opening up against former Pac-12 foe Oregon and later facing Vanderbilt and UC-Irvine. The next home game is March 3 against Grand Canyon, part of a 4-game homestand to wrap up nonconference play.
