What is the story about?

Newcastle United’s disastrous 4-1 defeat at Leeds United was compounded by a series of injuries that could leave Matthias Jaissle with limited options for Saturday’s meeting with a surprisingly strong Hull City side.

Anthony Elanga provided the most concerning update after missing Monday’s game entirely. Jaissle said the winger’s injury could be serious and that further testing is needed.

“With Anthony Elanga, it’s obvious that he struggles with an injury,” Jaissle said. “We need to further investigate

how serious it is. But at the moment it doesn’t look that good.

“It could be long term. He will get another MRI next week and we will see.”

Meanwhile, Nico Gonzalez lasted fewer than 20 minutes on the pitch on Monday after he suffered a head injury during the Leeds defeat and was withdrawn quickly with concussion symptoms.

“If he had that knock-out feeling, as you all saw, then we are responsible enough to take him off the pitch,” Jaissle said. “Independent of how important he is and how important it is to win a match, we are all human beings as well, and we take that seriously.”

Fellow midfielder Jacob Ramsey provided another setback before the game even started. He was due to feature but felt discomfort during the warm-up, Jaissle confirmed.

“He felt his thigh in the warm-up, so he was not able to play tonight,” Jaissle said. “That was the next challenge. That is tonight a little bit the story, I would say. Many things came together.”

Asked whether Newcastle could recover any of its injured players for Saturday’s game against Hull City, Jaissle admitted: “It doesn’t look good at the moment.”
