In what could become the most interesting story of Week 9 for the Cleveland Browns, QB Shedeur Sanders will start for the team, but starting QB Deshaun Watson has now been cleared from concussion protocol. On Friday, HC Todd Monken announced that Sanders would start, but Watson was listed as questionable for the game pending his ability to clear protocol.
Watson is still listed by the team as questionable for the game, so there is no certainty that he will be active against the New Orleans Saints.
There are a myriad of outcomes now possible for Week 9:
- Sanders starts and finishes the game
- Watson is inactive, with Dillon Gabriel as the backup and Taylen Green as the emergency QB
- Sanders starts, but Watson comes on in relief
- Watson is used for a package of plays, specifically when a QB run is useful
Included in the announcement about Watson clearing concussion protocol but remaining questionable for the game, the Browns made the signing of DT Sam Kamara official, while also signing TE Carsen Ryan to the practice squad and elevating him for Week 9.
Ryan was signed to Cleveland’s active roster on Wednesday, practiced, and then was waived on Thursday. Technically, Ryan was off the team until Saturday and is now elevated from the practice squad he just re-signed to.
What do you think happens with Watson and the QB position this Sunday?
