The Iowa State soccer team swirled past in-state opponent the University of Northern Iowa with a dominant 5-0 victory Sunday at the Cyclone Sports Complex, controlling the pace from start to finish.
With the result, the Cyclones improved to 3-2-1 on the season, while the Panthers fell to 0-5-1.
Sophie Forrester sparked the offensive onslaught in the 20th minute, converting a penalty kick into the bottom-left corner of the net. Ten minutes later, Alaina Villa extended the lead, finishing a left-footed
strike into the bottom-right corner of the goal after receiving an assist from Allison Charleston.
Before the end of the first half, Ava Hancock added a third goal in the 38th minute, burying a right-footed shot into the bottom center of the net. Hancock’s goal was set up by a double-assist from Mia Sowders and Morgan Goodman.
Iowa State maintained its relentless pressure after halftime, adding two more goals to the tally. In the 63rd minute, Megan Walters scored a left-footed goal into the bottom-left corner of the net. Unusually, the strike was assisted by goalkeeper Sara Gavagan, who had entered the match at halftime.
Izabella Tejeda scored the final goal in the 81st minute, firing a right-footed shot into the bottom-left corner off another assist from Sowders.
The Cyclones’ defense and midfield kept the Panthers under heavy duress, resulting in a massive 31-8 shot advantage for Iowa State, including 12 shots on goal to UNI’s three. The Cyclones also controlled eight corner kicks compared to the Panthers’ single attempt.
Goalkeepers Eme McClenahan and Gavagan combined for the clean sheet for the Cyclones. McClenahan played the first 45 minutes, registering one save, while Gavagan handled the second half, picking up two saves alongside her assist.
UNI also split goalkeeper duties between Hailey Luedtke and Poppy Anderson. Luedtke made five saves while allowing three goals in the opening period, and Anderson recorded two saves and allowed two goals in the final 45 minutes.
The physical match featured 22 combined fouls (13 by Iowa State and nine by UNI) and seven offside calls against the Cyclones, who repeatedly pushed the Panthers’ defensive line.
Attendance at the Cyclone Sports Complex was recorded at 280.
