FC Barcelona are playing for pride, honor, and of course, money in their meeting against Atlético Madrid. Teams reaching the UEFA Champions League semifinals will get a 15 million euro prize, plus additional gate receipts, and the chance to win more prize money in advancing.
For Barça, that could be important as they continue their financial recovery, though the team reportedly see it as a bonus, not a requirement, as the annual budget pre-supposes they reach the quarterfinals and no further. Barcelona
already have earned 100.34 million from the competition already, a figure surpassed only by Bayern Munich (112.32), Arsenal (109.74), Liverpool (109.47), and Real Madrid (102.62). Atlético have earned 89.22.
That amount comes from a combination of bonuses from results and fixed payments for participating in the league stage, plus additional prizes for advancing at every knockout stage.
In addition to the 15 million prize, the team playing the semifinals would get ticket sales from the home leg of the next round, whether it’s against Arsenal or Sporting Lisbon. And they could go on to get 18.5 million for advancing to the Final, plus 6.5 million for winning it. And if you do win it, you earn 4 million for participating in the European Super Cup, and 1 million more for winning it.
All told, a team that wins both the Champions League and the Super Cup could be due a total payout of around 150 million counting all fixed payments and bonuses from one Champions League campaign + one edition of the Super Cup.
