There are wins, there are big wins, and then there are wins as big as this one.
I mentioned it in my match report after the game (shameless plug if you haven’t read it yet), but Sunday afternoon felt like
a real moment. And it seems, judging by the reaction on Twitter, that most of you feel the same.
0-0 would’ve been a decent result – not great by any means, but definitely better than it could’ve been. But the players digging deep and finding that winning moment is a really promising sign.
Here’s how you reacted to some of the game’s key talking points…
New year, same Lewis Wing
I mean, where else can we begin?
We learned nothing new about how good Lewis Wing is on Sunday afternoon, but I will never get tired of watching him pop up with moments like that time and time again.
We are very fortunate to have him as our skipper, but you don’t need me to tell you that…
Finley Burns
The skipper wasn’t the only one to impress the fans on Sunday. There were some very good performances all over the pitch, but arguably none better than that of Finley Burns.
It’s fair to say he’s had his struggles this season, but he’s been seriously impressive since stepping in for the injured Derrick Williams. And Sunday was his most accomplished performance yet.
It’s really encouraging to see him improve the way he has done recently, and the fans are loving it…
The biggest win of the season?
The festive period as a whole has been a very productive one, and this win was the perfect cherry on top.
It’s a huge win for many reasons: the last-minute winner and how good a team Stockport are, but mainly because it narrows the gap to the playoffs and widens the gap to the relegation spots.
On a bitterly cold Berkshire afternoon, it was the perfect remedy for the Loyal Royals…
Conclusion
We won’t know the real significance of this win until the end of the season really. It needs to be built on and Leam Richardson will know that. If we don’t capitalise on the momentum and optimism this win has created, then it’ll all have been for nothing.
But at least we have a bit of optimism to hold onto now. It’s been a season of apathy really, void of anything substantially positive to cling onto. But that seems to have changed now, and there’s an opportunity for this team to do something special now.
Onwards and upwards from here. URZ.
