Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae had a special surprise for his teammates on their last night in South Korea.
According to Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), right after the team’s 2-1 win against Jeju SK, Kim had traditional Korean fried chicken delivered to the team hotel. It is said that he “wanted to create a special moment” to mark the end of the Korea tour, which was particularly meaningful to him as a native.
However, if this author is to give his thoughts, while the gesture was definitely
a kind one, he is mildly amused (and perhaps ever so slightly annoyed) that the team settled for just chicken when there are so many wonderful foods in Jeju. Being an island, Jeju is naturally known for its seafood, most notably mackerel and hairtail, both of which can be served either grilled or braised.
Jeju is also known for black pork, which gets its name from the color of the pigs. It is some of the finest pork that Korea has to offer. Considering Korean barbecue is immensely popular worldwide in general, this is saying a lot.
That said, considering it was well past 10pm by the time the team got to the hotel, if not later, this writer can completely understand why Kim opted for chicken, because it is also one of Korea’s most famous and popular late-night snacks (called “yashik” in Korean), and can be delivered late as well. Fun fact, Koreans even have a slang for chicken and beer – “chimaek.” It is a combination of chicken and maekju, which means beer in Korean, and it is a reflection of how chicken is such a huge part of Korean culture. This writer had chicken while watching the Jeju game himself.
Considering the team did spend four days in Jeju, this writer sincerely hopes that the team had time to try some local delicacies as well.
