Jordan Magee is getting back to practice. That’s a plus for the Commanders, who formally opened his 21-day window to return off injured reserve.
He was placed on IR following a hamstring strain suffered in a Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s an important depth piece and core special teams player who was missed while he was out.
Washington’s linebacker depth was tested during that stretch with Frankie Luvu missing time and Leo Chenal suffering a fractured neck that ended his season.
Magee
should be the primary backup if he’s able to return off IR. If he isn’t activated before the end of this 21-day window, he’ll be placed on season-ending injured reserve.
The Commanders have return to play guidelines that generally involved a ramp-up period, though it varies in length based upon the nature of the injury and a player’s health status.
Getting Magee before a Week 6 clash with San Francisco is probably an unfair expectation, but it’s not impossible. A return after the bye, though, seems more likely.
Also, head coach Dan Quinn said that cornerback Trey Amos and running back Jeremy McNichols, who are also on IR and in the midst of their practice windows, are expected to be full participants in practice this week. Same with safety Nick Cross, who is on the active roster. The Commanders brought defensive lineman Deatrich Wise back from IR last week and he was a key player up front.
