The Red Storm’s time as a top-ten team lasted all of one week into the season.
St. John’s was ranked No. 13 in the latest AP top 25 men’s basketball poll released on Monday, tumbling down from their preseason
No. 5 ranking after a 103-96 loss to No. 15 Alabama on Saturday. The eight-spot drop was the most of any ranked team in this week’s poll.
Conference mates UConn and Creighton remained ranked after finishing undefeated in the opening week, with the Huskies moving up to No. 3 and the Bluejays staying pat at No. 23. Georgetown was among the teams receiving votes after their 2-0 start, which included a 10-point road win over Maryland.
Despite Saturday’s disappointing loss, the Johnnies will have plenty of opportunities to climb back into the top ten in non-conference play. During Thanksgiving week, they will face No. 16 Iowa State and Baylor, the latter of whom received votes in this week’s poll. On December 6, they take on Mississippi at Madison Square Garden, another team receiving votes. Two weeks later, St. John’s travels down to Atlanta to face No. 9 Kentucky, who are currently rated by KenPom as the best team in the country.
St. John’s will have an extended break before their next game against the William & Mary Pride (2-0) on Saturday night at Carnesecca Arena. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on truTV.
