Despite SC Freiburg’s 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich, head coach Julian Schuster took a moment after Sunday’s match to address matters far more important than football.
Schuster expressed his condolences to the Kimmich family and offered his support to Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany, who has been hospitalized following a collapse earlier this week.
“My deepest condolences to the Kimmich family. And my best wishes for a speedy recovery to my fellow coach. I hope for a quick and, above all, full
recovery,” Schuster said (as captured by SC Freiburg’s social media team).
The message was a reminder that, even in the competitive world of professional football, there are moments when rivalries and results must take a back seat. While Freiburg fought hard against Bayern, Schuster made it clear that the circumstances surrounding the opposition deserved compassion and understanding.
Kompany’s health remains the priority for Bayern Munich, with the club ensuring that the Belgian can focus on his recovery without the pressures of his managerial responsibilities. Assistant coach Aaron Danks took charge against Freiburg as Bayern secured an important three points.
Schuster’s words reflected the solidarity that exists between coaches, regardless of which side of the touchline they occupy.
For Bayern Munich, the hope is that Kompany makes a complete recovery and returns when he is ready. Football will always be there. His health, and the well-being of those around him, matter far more.
