The hype and tension are palpable as the Women’s Pro Baseball League is headed into its final stretch before playoffs start on Sept. 9.
The San Francisco Firebells (6-4) sit atop the standings and is well rested, having not played since Aug. 22. They will play the Boston Hunters, who are in last place at 4-7, and are coming off a tough 8-6 loss to the L.A. Queens on Wednesday.
The game launches Heritage Weekend, highlighting the diverse home countries on every roster. Tonight’s game honors the U.S
and Canada with the first 250 fans getting a bobblehead of Boston pitcher and slugger Alli Schroder, who hails from Canada.
Saturday’s showdown with the Heights vs. the Queens will honor Japan, Korea and Australia.
On a personal note, I just want to share how much fun it is to go to these games. There is so much joy. It’s a beautiful thing that I never imagined I would be able to witness in my life.
Waiting for the game to start tonight, I went to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and saw Queens fans and Hunters fans. I talked to staff and they said so many women’s baseball fans are coming through Springfield, Illinois from all over the country. Everyone seems to know how special this inaugural season really is.
