After weeks of loitering at #15 in the country, the Vols finally moved up in the polls on Sunday afternoon despite not playing on Saturday.
Tennessee moved up 3 spots from #15 to #12 in both the AP and
Coaches Polls this week.
Tennessee was the beneficiary of a trio of upsets on Saturday across the country. Nico Iamaleava and the UCLA Bruins handed Penn State their second loss of the year 42-37 on the strength of the former Vol’s 5 touchdowns. Iowa State fell at Cincinnati 38-30. And Texas lost at Florida 29-21 to pick up their second loss of the season as well.
Texas was preseason #1, and Penn State was preseason #2 in the AP Poll. Now, both are out of the polls. And neither team has a win over a Power Four opponent yet this season. Just incredible.
In other notable rankings, former Tennessee offensive coordinator Alex Golesh got his South Florida Bulls back into the AP top 25, checking in at #24. Memphis also leapt into the rankings at #23. Also, the SEC has 7 of the top 12 teams in both polls.
