Bayern Munich has made several transfers in the past that have been crucial to the club’s success. So it is only natural that at least once in a while, the transfer drastically alters the player’s career for the better too.
Harry Kane’s Bayern move was one of the finest transfers orchestrated by Hasan Salihamidžić and while he had the misfortune of being sacked right before the move was finalized, he will always be credited for it. This move solved the problems that Bayern’s “striker-less” season
brought, and in fact, turned Bayern back into a serious Champions League contender.
Kane’s career, though illustrious, brought him no trophies, and this changed following his move. With trophies comes visibility and with visibility comes recognition. Said recognition now put him on the Ballon d’Or nominees list. The fact that Kane deserves the accolade is well-known, but he is hardly one to campaign for himself.
He was asked for his take on players Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé publicly campaigning for themselves. “Everyone is entitled to do what they want to do in that situation. Obviously the Ballon d’Or has become bigger and bigger over recent years, mainly because of social media, and all the noise, and all the conversations about it,” he said, speaking to The Standard (as transcribed by @iMiaSanMia.)
The English striker explained that it was simply not his personality to campaign for himself. “From my point of view, it’s just not my personality to talk about myself in that light. I’m still very proud of what I’ve done. And from a principle point of view, I know what I achieved last year was as good as anyone. So I don’t want to shy away from that either. But ultimately, my mindset is to move on,” he explained.
Further, he explained that the conversations were often disruptive, given the trophy is awarded after the new season has already begun. “I think the timing of the Ballon d’Or is tough, because you’re already in a new season, you’re already focused on what I can achieve this year. And after every game you’re talking about what you’ve done last year. So it’s hard for me to get my head around that,” he further went on.
“But from my point of view, it would be unbelievable to win it, I’d be extremely proud to win it,” he declared.
Further, speaking about his own chances, Kane believes that he is definitely in the running and that the voters will vote for whom they want, with the statistics and information they have available to them. He further explained that campaigning for oneself may impact the debate around who wins, but not always the voting itself.
Kane then expressed his gratitude towards all those who acknowledged his achievements.
“I think from my point of view, it makes me more proud when other people talk about me, when other team-mates or ex-players or whoever it is, people who compliment me on what I’ve achieved. I think that makes me more proud than me trying to talk about it myself,” he declared.
With the voting having ended a few days ago, the conversations may have quietened. We will simply have to wait to the end of October to see who wins it after all.
