Per a report by Justin Kroll of Deadline, Golden State Valkyries wing Gabby Williams is among three WNBA players who are currently slotted to appear in Courtside, a sports-based romantic comedy film by Run-A-Muck, a multi-platform company that is launching a women’s sports division with this project. Williams, former WNBA big Theresa Plaisance, and Indiana Fever point guard Sydney Colson are all currently a part of the project. Colson is also an executive producer.
Per Kroll, “the film follows an
injury-plagued women’s hoops superstar whose championship ambitions are upended when she falls for her teammate.” The script was written by by Brittani Nichols and Carly Usdin will direct. Usdin’s most prominent directorial experience was also with a Nichols’ script. The film (Suicide Kale) also starred Nichols and had no corporate backing or budget. It was filmed over just a few days with an entire cast and crew of queer women. The film won Best First U.S. Dramatic Feature at 2016 Outfest.
While Williams is the youngest of the WNBA players currently tied to the production, she is also the most proven. Colson and Plaisance both have won WNBA titles (Colson has two rings), but neither player was ever a consistent starter. Williams, on the other hand, is coming off her first All-Star selection last summer and is a two-time All-Defensive Team selection.
After the Valkyries made Williams their biggest acquisition of the offseason, signing her to a three-year, $3.7 million deal, she is in a position to make a bigger name for herself with a more prominent offensive role. While it’s still early, Williams is averaging a career-high 14.7 points per game through Golden State’s first three games of the season. She is also averaging 5.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.0 steals in 29.3 minutes per game on 38.5%/40.0%/75.0% shooting.
