Triple-A: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (MIA) 2, Norfolk Tides 0
Look, Brandon Young was excellent in a losing effort, posting a quality start with six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out five on 75 pitches. Unfortunately, Jacksonville’s Braxton Garrett was slightly better: he no-hit the Tides for six innings, needing only 66 pitches while walking one and fanning six. In fact, Norfolk managed just one hit all game, when Willy Vasquez singled to center with one out in the eighth.
The game remained scoreless until the ninth, when Jacksonville’s Kemp Alderman came to the plate with two outs and crushed a two-run home run off Norfolk reliever Cameron Foster to provide the margin of victory. In case you were wondering, Jackson Holliday went 0-for-4 with two K’s, and is hitting .167.
This game and series loss drops the Tides to 5-10.
Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 4, Erie SeaWolves (DET) 1
The Baysox claimed their fourth straight win in the series to finish 4-2 against Erie. The SeaWolves held a narrow 1-0 lead until the sixth inning, but that was as good as it got for them. Adam Retzbach worked a bases-loaded RBI walk in the sixth. The next inning, a balk score Carter Young. The Baysox plated two more runs in the eighth inning, with Frederick Bencosme and Douglas Hodo notching back-to-back hits.
Chesapeake pitching continued its stingy ways, with Sebastian Gongora going 5 2/3 innings with just three hits, one run, and six strikeouts. After him, Eric Torres, Jeisson Cabrera, and Zane Barnhart combined for 3.1 scoreless.
The bottom of the lineup provided most of the firepower for Chesapeake today: Retzbach Bencosme, and Douglas Hodo combined for three hits, three RBI and two walks. Carter Young singled and walked. Ethan Anderson singled and walked twice. Griff O’Ferrall reached base on a free pass, too.
High-A: Winston-Salem Dash (CWS) 9, Frederick Keys 4
The Keys led 4-0 until a sixth-inning implosion, courtesy of new guy Boston Bateman. Facing the big lefty, Winston-Salem batted around, racking up five runs on five hits and three walks. They scored four more in the eighth of a combo of Sayer Diederich and Juan Rojas, neither of whom was good.
The Keys scored their four runs in the first three innings. Ryan Stafford homered with Leandro Arias aboard, putting his team up 2-0. Wehiwa Aloy drove home Nate George with a single that same inning. And a walk, steal, and Arias RBI single scored a fourth run in the third.
A few Keys hitters had good days. Nate George doubled. Wehiwa Aloy singled, walked and drove in a run. Vance Honeycutt had one hit, but also struck out four times. Maikol Hernández singled and walked. Leandro Arias had an RBI single. And Ryan Stafford homered and drove in two.
The Keys are now 4-4.
Low-A: Augusta GreenJackets (ATL) 8, Delmarva Shorebirds 6
Two bad innings sunk the Shorebirds, who’d raced out to a 6-0 lead after five. Christian Rodriguez pitched four good innings, give up four hits, striking out five, and keep the GreenJackets off the board. But a rehabbing Michael Caldon allowed four runs in the sixth inning, and Todd Kniebbe allowed four more (two earned) in the ninth, getting tagged with the blown save. Relievers Kenny Leiner and Adrian Hereida each tossed a scoreless inning.
The Shorebirds scored five in the third and one more in the fifth. Luis Almeyda had the big blow, a bases-clearing double. Braylon Whitaker had two sacrifice flies. Delmarva is 3-6.
