The catch of the day was made by… oh hey… Darius Cooper again. Cooper was running toward the sideline, and when he ran out of real estate, he planted both feet on the ground and made a catch while falling to the ground. Great catch. He is clearly going to make the team, and I’m beginning to wonder if he might be the WR3.
Eagles practice observations: Lane Johnson’s heir apparent; Jihaad Campbell pops; Moro Ojomo’s pressures – Inquirer
Jihaad Campbell popped off the screen in the early portion of the scrimmage. The linebacker completely knocked Jurgens on his rear on an early run play. Later, Campbell fended off Steen at the second level and touched up running back Saquon Barkley. On the next play, he two-hand touched tight end Dallas Goedert after a sliding catch. I counted three more run plays in which Campbell was involved during the set. He did get washed out by Jurgens at one point. And in the “backed-up” period, he hesitated on a run blitz, and Barkley simply cut to the left and ran through the vacated gap. Zack Baun was equally impressive. He made the stop on Barkley’s first tote. He often teamed up with Campbell on other run stops. Baun also intercepted quarterback Jalen Hurts on a deflected pass in a two-minute drill. He correctly anticipated a later throw and nearly had another pick, but receiver Elijah Moore somehow escaped with the catch.

The unscheduled announcement came after Johnson was excused for six days for a personal reason. It mattered that it came at all. He could have played out this season with the question lingering, as they did last year. The franchise knows how to throw a spring retirement ceremony; they’ve done it for franchise icons such as Jason Kelce (who watched from the back as Johnson spoke Saturday), Brandon Graham and Fletcher Cox. By declaring his plans on a sweltering August Saturday morning, however, Johnson allowed for the type of farewell tour he deserves.

Cole Payton isn’t afraid to let it rip. The Eagles’ fifth-round quarterback out of North Dakota State has a live arm and the confidence to try some throws on the practice field … even when he probably shouldn’t. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in throwing the football,” Payton said. “But in the NFL, these windows are a lot tighter and so I’ve got to take care of the football. I’ve thrown a few picks. But there’s that balance of knowing when to strike and knowing when to take the check-downs. Going through those growing pains but taking the ups and the downs.” Through eight training camp practices, Payton has shown some encouraging signs, but he has also thrown five interceptions despite a limited workload.

As the 34th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Eagles’ receiver Elijah Moore was once on the right side of the personnel equation. Set to enter Year 6 of his NFL career after signing a one-year contract with Philadelphia in March, Moore, 26, is now swimming upstream against projection and larger contracts in an effort to make the 33-man roster. Through seven practices this summer, Moore has unquestionably been one of the better Eagles’ receivers, but the odds remain against the Ole Miss product.

On an offense that struggled at times, especially in throwing downfield, Eagles starter Dallas Goedert caught 11 of the team’s 26 TD throws. A majority of Cowboys fans (53%) think he will outright win it! Another 25% thought he would finish somewhere between third and fifth.

One day after training camp, a nameless Vikings’ wide receiver camp body was getting extra work on a JUGS machine, catching balls. He was being tutored by Fitzgerald, who was showing this player how to properly approach the incoming ball. This was a child instructing a grown man an NFL team deemed good enough to attend training camp. Larry Fitzgerald Jr. was special even back then. In addition to his incredible natural football ability, Larry Fitzgerald Jr. stood out for his politeness and good nature. You could tell he was a good kid from the first time you met him. There was no I’m-going-to-be-a-star attitude. He was genuine and he worked his tail off with the rest of the ball boys. There was no entitlement. It was as if he was using his time around an NFL camp as an internship for his future. He passed with flying colors.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan made a surprise media appearance on Saturday and told reporters he intends to coach in the team’s preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans on Aug. 13. Shanahan, who suffered three broken ribs, a broken hand, a broken nose and sustained a concussion in a July 14 car crash, also said he was close to returning to his normal routine after having to limit his coaching duties at the start of training camp.
