The San Diego Padres are running out of time to save their season. They dropped their third game in four days with a 3-2 loss to open a four-game series with the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on Monday. The frustrating part was the Padres cobbled together seven hits, but both of their runs came on solo home runs by Manny Machado and Ty France. The Braves were held to just four hits but scored three runs.
The first run of the game for Atlanta came on a Michael Harris II solo home run in the bottom
of the fifth to tie the game, 1-1. San Diego starter JP Sears put together a solid performance on the mound, but with his team unable to do any damage at the plate it was not enough. The Braves took the lead later in the inning thanks to a catcher’s interference and a double which led to the go-ahead run to make the score, 2-1. Ozzie Albies extended the Atlanta lead to 3-1 with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
France pulled San Diego within a run with a solo home run in the seventh and had a scoring opportunity to tie the game later in the inning. Luis Rengifo followed France with a single and advanced to second on a Xander Bogaerts groundout. Rengifo then moved to third on a Jake Cronenworth groundout. Luis Campusano was called on to pinch-hit for Freddy Fermin and drew a walk to put runners at the corners. Sung-Mun Song then flied out to Harris in center field to end the inning and the last scoring threat for the Padres.
Sears did what was asked of him, completing five innings and putting his team in position to earn a win. He allowed two runs, one earned, one three hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Wandy Peralta allowed a home run in an inning of work and Bradgley Rodriguez and Kyle Hart each pitched scoreless innings to complete the game.
San Diego will try to level the series at 4:15 p.m. today.
