It was a big day for Liverpool’s defenders off on international duty as left back Milos Kerkez scored the winning goal for Hungary as they beat Georgia and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili 1-0 in Nations League action.
After the match, teammate for both club and country Dominik Szoboszlai reacted to the win—and to Kerkez’ role in it, including a quite unexpected goal in his 35th senior cap. It was Hungary’s first win of this edition of the Nations League following a loss to Ukraine and draw with Northern
Ireland.
“We produced an amazing first half and we had our chances, it shouldn’t have just been 1-0,” Szoboszlai said. “But we needed to show this fighting spirit—everyone in the squad needed to fight together to not concede a goal. This fighting spirit is what we need.”
Szoboszlai also called Kerkez’ goal “the last thing he expected” according to Hungary’s m4sport, who also claimed the Hungary captain said his teammate wasn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer but puts his heart and soul into the game.
That line has already been getting play in Liverpool circles, but it’s worth noting it’s mentioned not as a direct quote and so what exactly Szobozslai might have said is a little difficult to ascertain with complete certainty.
Elsewhere today, Jeremy Jacquet got his second start on the bounce for France as Zinedine Zidane continues to show faith in the young centre half. His performance has again been lauded but France could only manage a 1-1 draw with Italy over 90 minutes.
