Wednesday notes…
- LET’S END THIS STREAK, PLEASE: The Cubs go into tonight’s game with not one, but two MLB-record highly undesirable streaks. They have scored three or fewer runs in 13 consecutive post-season games, one more than the previous high of 12 by the Dodgers in 1916-41. The Cubs’ streak began in Game 1 of the 2017 Championship Series against the Dodgers, following a 9-8 win at Washington in Game 5 of the Division Series at Washington. In the 13 games, the Cubs were outscored, 58-22. They scored three runs in five games, including the last three; two runs in one game; one run in five; and were shut out in two. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- AND THIS ONE, TOO: The Cubs have scored three or fewer runs in 14 consecutive post-season games at home, six more than the previous high set by the Mariners in 1995-2000 and matched by the Twins in 2010-23. The Cubs’ streak began with Game 1 of the 2016 World Series, following a 5-0 win over the Dodgers in Game 6 of the Championship Series. In the 14 games, the Cubs were outscored, 50-20. They scored three runs in four games, including two of the last three; two runs in two games; one run in four; and were shut out in four. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- COMING HOME: The Cubs were 11-2 in the regular season in first games at home after returning from the road. They won their first nine such games, through Aug. 1, before losing to the Pirates on Aug. 15. Then they beat the Braves on Sept. 1 and the Rays on Sept. 12 before losing to the Mets on Sept. 23. - THIS DAY IN CUBS HISTORY: Travis Wood homered and the Cubs defeated the Giants 5-2 to take a 2-0 lead in their NL Division Series. It happened nine years ago today, Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016.
Cubs lineup:
Brewers lineup:
Jameson Taillon, RHP vs. Quinn Priester, RHP
Jameson Taillon has been the Cubs’ best starter not named Cade Horton since late August.
Including his four shutout innings against the Padres in the Wild Card Series, Taillon has a 1.41 ERA and 0.861 WHIP over his last seven starts covering 38.1 innings, with only two home runs allowed.
He made two starts against the Brewers during
the regular season. The first, May 3 in Milwaukee, was pretty good — two runs in six innings. The second, June 19 at Wrigley Field, was not — eight hits and five runs in four innings.
Jamo had a better ERA at home (2.86 in 11 starts including the Wild Card Series) than on the road (4.20 in 13 starts). Here’s hoping he’s on his game this afternoon.
Quinn Priester grew up a Cubs fan in the northwest suburbs (he went to Cary-Grove High School). Now he’s facing his favorite childhood team in the postseason, his first postseason start.
Credit to the Brewers for taking a guy who was terrible in Pittsburgh (6.46 ERA in 20 games, 14 starts) and turning him into a reliable starter.
He made three starts against the Cubs this year. Overall he posted a 6.28 ERA and 1.953 WHIP in 14.1 innings, but that’s basically one bad start, one mediocre one and one good, though short, outing.
Priester last pitched on Sept. 26, so he’s going on 11 days rest. Perhaps he’ll be a bit rusty. For whatever it’s worth, Michael Busch, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Nico Hoerner all homered off Priester this year. He allowed 18 home runs overall and the Cubs are the only team who hit more than two.

Today’s game is on TBS, truTV and streaming on HBO Max. Announcers: Alex Faust and Ron Darling, with reporter Lauren Jbara.
