Newcastle United completed a dramatic summer overhaul under Matthias Jaissle, but the club is already looking ahead to January as its new recruitment strategy continues to take shape.

One name from the summer window apparently has not disappeared from Newcastle’s plans. According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, the Magpies intend to continue their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen forward Christian Kofane when the transfer market reopens, with Aston Villa also keeping its interest alive.

“Newcastle

United and Aston Villa will continue their chase of Bayer Leverkusen’s Christian Kofane into the January transfer window,” O’Rourke reported. “The Premier League duo have been heavily linked with a move to sign the 20-year-old forward in recent days, but were ultimately unable to seal a deal before the deadline.”

Both Premier League clubs explored moves for Kofane during the closing stages of the summer window, but both failed to complete a deal. Newcastle will now continue monitoring the 20-year-old during the first half of the season before potentially making another attempt in January.

The Cameroon international scored seven goals and supplied six assists across all competitions last season and has opened the 2026-27 campaign with two goals in his first three appearances, two of them in the Bundesliga and the other one a DFB Pokal matchup.

Kofane also fits the profile Newcastle increasingly targeted during its summer rebuild, with the Magpies largely acquiring younger players capable of developing alongside Jaissle.

All things considered, there will still be a substantial obstacle to overcome for Newcastle, and that’s a financial one. Previous reporting from Bild placed Bayer Leverkusen’s valuation at approximately €100 million (£87 million), with the Bundesliga club reluctant to lose a player it considers an important part of its project.
