Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has shared his verdict on Barcelona’s decision to sign Anthony Gordon
from the Magpies.Gordon is set to seal a move to the Catalan giants shortly and the Premier League’s all-time top scorer thinks it’s a transfer that keeps everyone happy.
“I think it’s a good deal for both. I think it is for both parties, for Anthony and for Newcastle. Clearly, he wants to leave. The manager hasn’t played him for the last five or six weeks,” he told Betfair.
“I know he’s scored goals
this season, mostly in the Champions League. He got six league goals, three were penalties. But there’s no doubt there’s talent there, but if there’s talent there that’s not fully into it then you have to let them go and they have done. I think it’s a good deal for both parties. The quicker the deal was done, the better so Newcastle could plan and move on.”
Shearer did however question what Gordon’s arrival means for Marcus Rashford’s future at Barcelona.
“I’m surprised though that Barcelona are paying £70 million for him, plus add-ons because I didn’t think that Barca had that type of money. I mean, although maybe they’re playing a smart game, and they’ve now got that money to spend. What they now do with Rashford is a question, whether they have both Rashford and Gordon, I don’t know,” he added.
“I thought that it was more Bayern Munich that Gordon would go to, because there have been that many rumours about the German side. But Barcelona have come in late and yeah, I was a tad surprised that they could get that amount of money together, albeit you don’t have to pay all of it up front, it’s over the length of the contract.”
Gordon and Rashford are due to link up shortly with the England squad for World Cup 2026.
