The San Antonio Spurs’ season kicks off tonight, and with it comes the weight of expectation. The Spurs have gone from an up-and-coming young team to an expected contender for playoff positioning in the Western Conference. Experts, players, and coaches have all pegged this team as at least a play-in team. We’ll see if San Antonio can live up to that hype this season.
Oddsmakers have set the Spurs’ win total at 44.5 this season. Hitting the over at 45 wins would have put San Antonio 9th in the West,
fighting for their playoff lives in the play-in tournament. If they want to get to the 6th seed and stay out of the play-in tournament, they’ll likely need to get to 48 or 49 wins. That would be a huge leap from the 34 games the Spurs won last season.
If they want to make that leap, they’ll need the players not named Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox to improve. Right now, the Spurs roster can be seen as a big two, with some intriguing players who could become the third option, and good depth with solid role players. Who is going to be the third head of King Ghidorah in San Antonio? Will it be the rookie Dylan Harper, who looks ready to contribute right away, Stephon Castle making another leap in his sophomore season, or the sweet shooting wing Devin Vassell?
Vote on both of these key questions about the Spurs’ season in the poll below. We’ll be back later this week with the results.
