What a match. In one of the best games in the Bundesliga this season, Bayern Munich managed to comeback away in Leipzig. Ole Werner’s side were causing all sorts of problems in Bayern’s half and it seemed like the game was getting away from Bayern, before a massive turn of events for the ended with a demolition of the Tin Cans. It is unfortunate that Leipzig are not in the Champions League, as this squad seems worthy of a solid tournament,
Jersey Swap — Peter Gulasci
Okay, hear me out.
Did Gulasci concede five goals? Yes. However,
the Hungarian goalkeeper had an oustanding performance keep the scoreline from any more goals. Bayern were relentless in their attack today and the Leipzig veteran was a massive reason that Leipzig were in the game for almost 90 minutes.
It would be a failure to not mention Yan Diomande. What a player. He is putting in a case to be the best young star in the league at the moment. Germany’s defense will have their hands full when they play Ivory Coast in Toronto this summer.
Der Kaiser — Jonathan Tah
Both Bayern’s central defenders had a great day of stopping a strong Leipzig attack. The same cannot be said for Itō and Bischof, who were both subbed off.
Tah had plenty of doubters when he first joined Bayern Munich, but he has proved to be a difference maker for Bayern and the defense would simply not be the same without the former Leverkusen star.
It doesn’t hurt that Tah has become more involved in goal contributions. Clearly, the veteran has plenty to offer on both ends of the pitch.
Honorable mention should be made to Manuel Neuer, who had an excellent game. While he didn’t record a clean sheet, his performance was massively important.
Der Fussballgott — Joshua Kimmich
Similar to Olise, Kimmich’s presence was felt immediately. While there are some injury concerns for the German midfielder, it certainly didn’t impact his performance today. Alongside Aleksandar Pavlović, the duo stabilized the team and proved not only effective in thwarting Leipzig’s attack but facilitating a tremendous offense in the second half.
Kimmich is quietly putting in an excellent string of performances. Let’s hope this form continues into the Champions League knockouts.
Der Bomber — Jamal Musiala
This award is one of sentiment. Seeing Musiala back on the field was truly something special. After such a major setback it is so great to see Bayern’s starboy back in action. While his appearance was limited to just a few minutes, he made an immediate impact, assisting Michael Olise.
Lennart Karl has proved to be an X-factor for Bayern, but with Musiala back in the rotation, there will be strong competition for players to earn their spot in the starting lineup. Kompany has some big decisions to make but Musiala’s return will likely mean a bench role for Karl and Gnabry.
Meister of the Match — Michael Olise
The game completely flipped once Olise stepped on the field. While it was good to see him get some well deserved rest, he is simply too good to be left out in important matches.
The Frenchman should be in the argument for the world’s best player. He is rarely mentioned in the conversation of the world’s best but Olise has shown time and time again that he is world class and a gamechanging player. While he had an off day last week, there are few players that can make the sort of impact he has on the pitch.
The transfer from Crystal Palace will be looked back upon as one of the most important transfers Bayern Munich has ever made. What a deal for one of the best players in the world.
