The Dallas Cowboys have been busy as of late. We are only at Week 4 of the 2026 NFL season, but they have been wheeling and dealing draft picks related to 2027 for some time now, and Wednesday night was the latest example.
The Cowboys struck a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers to acquire veteran cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and they spent a second-round pick in 2028 to do so, along with a sixth-rounder in 2027. The details around Dallas’ 2027 draft allotment are a little fuzzy with all of the deals
they are doing, three of which have come with Pittsburgh specifically, so we have organized what they have to work with.
2027 Dallas Cowboys draft picks following the Joey Porter Jr. trade
Round 1: The Cowboys own a first-round pick, but it is the worse of theirs and Green Bay’s. Dallas has Green Bay’s by way of the Micah Parsons trade, but they owe the better of the pair to the New York Jets as a result of the Quinnen Williams trade.
2: The Cowboys own their second-round pick. This is the easiest one in the entire discussion.
4: While the Cowboys do own a fourth-round pick, it is not their original one (more on that shortly). They own Pittsburgh’s fourth-rounder as it came to them in the Broderick Jones trade.
7: Similarly, the Cowboys do not own their original seventh-round pick. The one that they have came to them by way of the Nate Thomas trade. That deal happened with the Houston Texans, but Houston held the pick by way of the New England Patriots.
What happened to the other picks?!
You might be wondering where the rest of the picks went.
Round 1: As noted, the better of the two they own will belong to the Jets. This hasn’t technically happened yet, obviously.
3: The Cowboys dealt this to Pittsburgh in the Broderick Jones trade. As they got the fourth back, it was effectively a pick swap.
4: Dallas dealt their original fourth-round pick to the Green Bay Packers to acquire Rashan Gary.
5: The Cowboys sent this pick to the Steelers as well, but it came in last year’s George Pickens trade.
6: The Cowboys just sent this pick to Pittsburgh as a part of the Joey Porter Jr. deal.
7: Dallas’ original seventh-round pick went to the Philadelphia Eagles in the trade down during this past draft’s first round. Philly jumped up to select Makai Lemon and Dallas moved down before selecting Malachi Lawrence.
It should also be noted that Pittsburgh sent Dallas their 2027 sixth as a part of everything involved in the George Pickens trade, but the Cowboys sent it back to the Steelers in the Broderick Jones trade.
What are the net results between Dallas and Pittsburgh specifically?
As you can see, the Cowboys and Steelers have really enjoyed finding one another on the proverbial dance floor as of late. It is important to note that the three trades they executed were all separate, but it is interesting to see the net results between them.
Cowboys Received:
- George Pickens
- Broderick Jones
- Joey Porter Jr.
- 2027 4th
Steelers Received:
- 2026 3rd (from Pickens trade, became Drew Allar)
- 2027 3rd (from Jones trade)
- 2027 5th (from Pickens trade)
- 2027 6th (from Porter Jr. trade)
- 2028 2nd (from Porter Jr. trade)
And again, that 2027 sixth that originally belonged to Pittsburgh also passed hands through Dallas before returning.
Oh, and Mike McCarthy used to coach the Cowboys and now coaches the Steelers.
Got it? Good.
