It looks like the Deacs will be finishing the season with a rematch of the 2011 Music City Bowl this year, taking on Mississippi State and their dreaded cowbells in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The game will take place in Charlotte on January 2nd at 8 PM.
Mississippi State finished the season at 5-7, but due to opt outs from Notre Dame, Iowa State, and
Kansas State, the Bulldogs were able to accept an invite based on their APR (Academic Progress Rate). The last time Wake faced off against Mississippi State, the Bulldogs beat the Deacs 23-17 in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl in 2011.
We can look a little more in depth at the scouting later, but at first glance, it seems like the Bulldogs run the ball a lot (16th in rushing attempts per game) and allow their opponents to run quite a bit as well (18th most rushing yards per game allowed in FBS this season). Of course, the two teams may look completely different in January based on who is opting out for the portal and who is deciding to play in the bowl game. It should be noted that the transfer portal doesn’t officially open until January 2nd, which just happens to coincide with the day of this game.
Playing a 5-win team after winning 8 games this season may not be the matchup we were hoping for, but it should still be a fun game. Just make sure to bring some hearing protection.
Go Deacs!
