We’re about to hit six straight home games, but I’m not sure there’s been a bigger game at Faurot Field in quite a while. The last time the Tigers played a top 10 opponent at home was in 2022 against Georgia,
the stakes for the Tigers were much lower. The last time Mizzou faced a top 10 opponent at home while they were also ranked was 2010, when Mizzou took down Oklahoma in one of the most cathartic wins I can remember.
The “ranked Mizzou vs top 10 opponent at home” is a short list after that, but it did happen twice in 1973!
- 1998: #2 Kansas State 31, #19 Missouri 25
- 1979: #4 Texas 21, #5 Missouri 0
- 1978: #1 Alabama 38, #11 Missouri 20
- 1975: #3 Nebraska 30, #12 Missouri 7
- 1973: #12 Missouri 13, #2 Nebraska 12
- 1973: #3 Oklahoma 31, #10 Missouri 3
- 1970: #3 Notre Dame 24, # 18 Missouri 7
I don’t know if I need to go back further than that, things were obviously very different back in the 70s. But Missouri has had real problems with Alabama since they’ve joined the SEC. They’ve only played 8 times total, and this will be just the 6th time the two have played since 2012, Mizzou’s first year in the league. But the Tigers did own a 2-1 record over the Tide before joining the league.
Being in the SEC has been a different animal. The closest final score in this series was a 38-19 win in 2020 and that game was 35-3 in the 3rd quarter. Alabama dominated Missouri in the SEC Championship game in 2014. In 2012 you may recall Corbin Berkstresser was thrown to the wolves to face #1 Alabama, and he was 12-29 with 2 INTs. Last year the defense fought as the offense struggled to do much of anything with a banged up Brady Cook, but they eventually caved in a 34-0 loss.
Alabama is Alabama for a reason. There’s a common joke in college football where fans will hold up a sign that reads “We want Bama”. It’s a credit to what Nick Saban accomplished. Missouri was rarely ready for this matchup. However Missouri was also not as fully formed as they are right now. This feels like the first time they have a shot.
As usual, check out the in depth preview of Alabama and the game by Nate here.
