The top club competition in Europe begins in less than two weeks as the 2026-27 edition of the UEFA Champions League kicks off with Matchday 1 of the League Phase in the second week of September.
Back-to-back reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain have proven in the last two years that the League Phase is less important than originally thought, and that finishing in the Top 8 to guarantee an automatic spot in the Round of 16 and avoid the Playoffs at all costs may not be as big of a priority for clubs
who really believe they can win it all.
But for clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Manchester City, who are among the betting favorites and have a very busy schedule in England and Spain, avoiding two extra Playoff games is a benefit to the general health and fitness of their squads as they look to make a deep run in all competitions and have a harder path to domestic success compared to PSG and Bayern Munich, who are also heavy favorites for this season.
The eighth and final matchday of the League Phase was incredibly tense and exciting in the first two years of the new format as teams put it all on the line to finish either in the Top 8 or in the Top 24 to avoid elimination and clinch a Playoff spot, and this season’s field of 36 teams guarantees another exciting League Phase.
So here are some way too early predictions for what is about to unfold in the initial stage of this season’s UEFA Champions League.
PSG will finally finish in the Top 8
The reigning back-to-back champs famously finished outside the Top 8 in both of their title-winning seasons, and slow starts to the season are a fixture of Luis Enrique’s teams as they usually find their best version after January.
Their schedule is tough, including meetings with Manchester City, Barcelona, Villarreal and Aston Villa, but after dealing with a crazy numbers of injuries at the start of last season, PSG will likely suffer a positive regression to the mean from an injury standpoint and have their best players regularly available for European fixtures.
They also have a deeper squad this season and won’t have to rely so much on younger players as they did in last year’s League Phase, and Luis Enrique can always rotate his squad in Ligue 1 matches to ensure his most trusted starting XI will play in the Champions League.
If they stay healthy this time around and avoid dropping points against the easier opponents on their schedule, PSG feel like a safe bet to compete for top spot in this year’s League Phase.
Barcelona, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid will finish in the Top 4
The two Spanish giants, last season’s finalists and Germany’s record champions are a lock to cruise through the League Phase and fight for a Top 2 finish, which guarantees home matches in the second legs of all knockout rounds.
Arsenal remain a great defensive team and made a key midfield addition in Bruno Guimarães, and that strong spine will be enough to offset an attack that remains without a true superstar. This team is too strong, too well-coached, and doesn’t drop points in the League Phase.
Bayern have always dominated the early stages of the Champions League whether in the League Phase or the old group stage, and Vincent Kompany’s side is deeper, stronger and with a comfortable schedule. Real Madrid also got a favorable draw, and strong starts for José Mourinho’s teams are never a surprise.
As for Barcelona, who face monster tests against PSG and Man City and have a challenging draw overall, they will have compete focus in the Champions League and will take every single European test very seriously. The arrival of Rodri is a true game changer, the squad is deep, Hansi Flick is a great coach, and Camp Nou will be rocking on European nights.
