The Detroit Lions are bringing back tight end Tyler Conklin, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Conklin had been repping as TE3 throughout training camp, and it was a surprise to see him released last Sunday. However, with him returning to the team just a few days later, it’s plausible that this was the plan all along.
We reached out to Zenitz for clarification on whether Conklin was returning to the 53-man roster or taking the Lions’ last remaining spot on the practice squad, but
we didn’t hear back before we published.
If Conklin is being added to the practice squad, no corresponding move would be required. He could immediately start practicing with the team and would be eligible for a game-day roster elevation in Week 1.
If he is returning to the 53-man roster, that would mean the Lions would need to make a corresponding move to make room. That could be as simple as cutting another player to create space, or placing an injured player on injured reserve.
Regardless of where Conklin lands on the roster, his balanced skill set adds another layer to the tight end room, giving the Lions depth, security against injury, and opening up the playbook to include more heavy sets that include multiple tight ends—including running 13 personnel (three tight end sets).
“If you have three tight ends that don’t have a multiple skill set, you’re not going to do it,” offensive coordinator Drew Petzing said of running 13 personnel. “Because the key is the matchups. When you have guys that can do a lot of different things, you can start to dictate things based on what the defense wants to do.”
At this time, the Lions have not confirmed the move, identified where he fits on the roster, or announced a corresponding move (if necessary), but we will keep you updated as things progress.
