Following an impressive Champions League win over Aston Villa in midweek, Barcelona return to action for the final game before the last international break of 2026 as the Blaugrana travel to the Spanish capital for a gigantic La Liga clash with Atlético Madrid at the Estadio Metropolitano on Sunday Night Fútbol.
Barça come into this one looking to make a big statement in the title race and open up a five-point gap over the Colchoneros, as well as restore their three-point lead over Real Madrid.
It’s a brutal test for Hansi Flick and his troops, as the rivalry with Atlético has really heated up with 10 total meetings in all competitions over the last two seasons and a very public and ugly transfer saga involving Julián Álvarez.
These two clubs do not like each other and this is one of the most anticipated games of the La Liga season, and Álvarez’s performance will be scrutinized in every way possible. The Argentine tends to play well against Barça, and it’ll be fascinating to see how he’ll handle the occasion on Sunday.
But Julián cannot be the only focus from a Barça standpoint: Atleti have been very good this season, and were riding a nine-game unbeaten streak before losing to Bayern Munich in midweek.
Diego Simeone’s side have displayed a very interesting attacking flair this season thanks to two key additions: Alejandro Grimaldo at left-back and Lee Kang-in as a do-it-all, free-roaming forward, and both have added a dynamic that the Atlético attack never quite had under Simeone.
Atleti are more attack-minded and want to keep the ball more this season, but they remain a very strong defensive team and can easily switch back to a more reactive style against opponents such as Barça.
They will be very intense on Sunday and look for opportunities to create errors by pressing Barça high up the pitch, and the aerial threat created by Grimaldo as an elite set piece taker cannot be overlooked either.
The Colchoneros are real contenders this season and will give Barça a brutal test, and the Blaugrana must be at their very best to escape Madrid with a crucial win in the title race.
Let’s dance.

PREDICTION
This season’s Atlético are much more attack-minded than usual and will not be afraid to go toe-to-toe with Barça, and this has the potential to be a crazy, wide-open, back-and-forth contest for the ages. I’m going to trust the good guys to pull this off, but they must be ready for a real battle: 3-2 Barça.
