Atletico Madrid CEO Gil Marin spoke about the Julian Alvarez situation
after Thursday’s Champions League draw and had some very strong words indeed.Alvarez has missed training with Atletico for the last two days and Marin says the Argentina star is in a really difficult moment.
“Julián is not doing well. There have been people who have tried to deceive him, to confuse him,” he told Movistar.
“I deeply regret this because we’ve been working with him for a long time, and he’s a great person, a great professional,
a great footballer, but he’s completely confused. He’s currently going through a very difficult time, both personally and professionally.”
Joan Laporta has spoken about his club’s desire to sign Alvarez this week and his comments drew a strong response from Marin.
“We are even more outraged, because we are disgusted by the falsehood, the lack of ethics and professionalism of Barça. We can only insist that we are not going to negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances,” he added.
“As general manager and main manager of the club I have the support of everyone and the only safe and firm direction is this: he is not going to be transferred to Barça. I’ve been in the world of football for thirty-odd years and what I have is my word and I can say that the player is not going to be transferred to Barça”.
Martin continued to rant a little bit more and then said he is hoping Alvarez, who has said he wants to leave Diego Simeone’s side, stays at his club.
“Our intention, my personal dream, is for him to stay with us, to continue providing his services to Atlético de Madrid. To compete among the greats, you need great players,” he said.
“And Julián is one of them. If he were to conclude that being at Atlético and in Madrid is incompatible , we would look for an alternative; but it would never be FC Barcelona.”
