Toledo Mud Hens 3, Columbus Clippers 1 (box)
Dylan File did a nice job navigating the Clippers lineup, and Ben Malgeri and Gage Workman stayed hot at the plate as the Hens took down the Clippers on Wednesday to even the series.
File blanked the Clippers for six innings despite just a pair of strikeouts.
The Hens opened the scoring in the third when Max Burt singled, stole second, and scored on a Malgeri double. Singles from Max Clark and Gage Workman made it 2-0 when the inning ended. Burt would double and score on a Malgeri single in the seventh
to make it 3-0.
Matt Seelinger handled the seventh, but leaked a run in the eighth. Tyler Mattison, recently back from Erie, came on to clean up that inning and then locked downt he ninth for his first save.
Malgeri: 2-5, R, 2 RBI, 2B, K
Burt: 2-4, 2 R, 2B, SB
Workman: 1-3, RBI, BB, K
File (W, 3-0): 6.0 IP, 0 R, H, BB, 2 K
Coming Up Next: It’s a 6:35 p.m. ET start on Wednesday.
Erie SeaWolves 7, Chesapeake Baysox 3 (box)
Lefty Carlos Peña spun another gem in this one, while John Peck continues to get hot at the plate.
Seth Stephenson led off the bottom of the first by reaching on an error and stealing second. He would score on a Thayron Liranzo ground out. Brett Callahan drew a walk and rode home on Peck’s fourth home of the season for an early 3-0 lead.
Pena was in a spot of trouble in the third as he issued a walk with two outs and the next batter reached on a Peck throwing error from shortstop. Fortunately, Ethan Anderson lined out to Izaac Pacheco at third to end the threat.
Pacheco then launched a solo shot in the fourth. Peyton Graham followed him with a single and stole second, eventually scoring on an E.J. Exposito double to make it 5-0 Erie.
Peña allowed a leadoff double in the fifth, and a groundout got the runner to third. Peña then bounced a pitch that stuck in Liranzo’s chest protector. That was a weird one, as the runner was awarded home plate to make it 5-1. Still, that was all the Baysox could muster against him.
Peck got that run back by doubling in the eighth, then stealing third and scoring on an errant throw on the play. Later, with two outs in the inning, Graham again singled and stole second. An Exposito grounder to third went for an error, and Graham scored to make it 7-1 Erie.
Woo-Suk Go was excellent in relief, spinning a pair of perfect innings with two strikeouts. Erie Silva followed suit in the eighth. Tanner Kohlhepp got into some trouble in the ninth, allowing two runs, but eventually shut it down to secure the victory.
Peck: 2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B, HR, 2 K
Exposito: 1-3, RBI, 2B, BB
Graham: 1-3, 2 R, BB, 2 K, 2 SB
Peña (W, 3-1): 5.0 IP, ER, H, BB, 4 K
Coming Up Next: The series is tied up heading into a 6:05 p.m. ET start on Thursday.
Cedar Rapids Kernels 4, West Michigan Whitecaps 3 (box)
Lefty Ben Jacobs has been one of the more impressive players on the farm in his pro debut season. On Wednesday, he moved up to the High-A level and pitched another good game. The Whitecaps just couldn’t put enough runs as the bullpen faltered a bit to lose their second straight in this series.
Jacobs scattered three hits and two walks, striking out seven, and looked outstanding apart from the fourth inning. A single and a walk got him into some trouble, and a two-run double followed before he locked down the Kernels again. A Cristian Santana throwing error led to the Kernels third run in the sixth with Seth Chavez on the mound.
Finally in the seventh, Bryce Rainer doubled and scored on a Clayton Campbell single. Junior Tilien doubled in Campbell to make it a 3-2 game heading into the ninth after Carlos Lequerica handled the bottom of the eighth without issue.
The Whitecaps needed a comeback, and they got part of one, as Rainer led off the top of the ninth with a walk. Campbell singled him to third, but Santana popped out. A Tilien ground out was enough to get Rainer home and tie the game, but that was all they’d get.
For the second day in a row, the Whitecaps then got walked off as Zack Lee allowed a solo shot in the bottom half to lose it.
Rainer: 2-2, 2 R, 2B, 2 BB
Campbell: 3-4, R, RBI
Jacobs: 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 7 K
Coming Up Next: It’s a 7:05 p.m. ET start on Thursday.
Bradenton Maruaders 5, Lakeland Flying Tigers 1 (box)
The offense just didn’t get anything going on Wednesday. Cash Kuiper made the start, giving up a pair of runs, one earned, in three innings of work.
In the fourth, Jesus Pinto walked, but he was picked off right before Zach MacDonald doubled. That missed opportunity was their first hit of the game, and there were only three in total.
Eliseo Mota walked a tightrope in the fifth but was able to escape, and in the top of the sixth, the Flying Tigers did break through. Jude Warwick walked with one out, and Pinto singled. Bradenton went back to the bullpen, but then walked MacDonald to load the bases. Carson Rucker lifted a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-1 deficit, but they’d get no closer.
Jan Carabello gave up a walk and a two-run homer in the seventh, and the Flying Tigers never threatened again.
MacDonald: 1-3, 2B, BB, 2 K
Pinto: 1-3, BB, K
Kuiper (L, 0-2): 3.0 IP, 2 R, ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 2 K
Coming Up Next: First pitch on Thursday is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
