Colombia got a devastating victory after defeating Mexico by a 4-0 score. Colombia was the better side and more so, the more efficient, to get a great victory over a Mexico that gets a terrible result
in a terrible day. Colombia will now travel to New Jersey, where they will face off against Canada while Mexico will travel to Guadalajara to face off against Ecuador, who comes in after tying against the United States.

Mexico came out with a different starting 11 than normal with Diego Lainez making a surprising start while Santiago Gimenez took the place of injured Raul Jimenez, who wasn’t called up because of that. A cross into the area was headed by Marcel Ruiz easily to Colombia’s goalkeeper, David Ospina. James Rodriguez got the ball and from outside the area got off a left footed shot just wide. After Gimenez made a good move in the area to get past Willer Ditta, he got off a left footed shot that went just wide. Off a free kick, a great cross from Rodriguez was volleyed from close range by Jhon Lucumi and it went past Mexico’s goalkeeper, Luis Malagon to score and give Colombia the 1-0 lead. It was a terribly defended corner kick and although Mexico’s players asked for a foul, VAR determined it was a goal. A strong right footed shot from Alexis Vega would hit Ditta in the face which caused him to need medical attention. Mexico started to gain control of the possession but of course, they did so since Colombia sat back as they had a lead to defend now. A cross into the area was just out of reach of Gimenez and then Cesar Montes. Colombia started to dominate the match in the final minutes of the half although Mexico did a good job defending. A good counter after winning a ball ended with Orbelin Pineda getting off a shot straight to a Colombian defender, wasting a chance. A controversial play happened when Ruiz looked to have been fouled in the area but nothing was given. The halftime whistle blew and Colombia took a deserved lead to the halftime break.
The 2nd half started with both teams coming out with the same 11 that they started the match with. A cross into the area would find a wide open Pineda, but he sent his shot straight to Ospina, wasting a good chance. After Mexico lost a ball, Rodriguez sent a thru pass to Luiz Diaz, who made mince meat out of Jorge Sanchez, got into the area and lobbed off a right footed shot past a desperate Malagon to score and give Colombia the 2-0 lead. The even match looked to have been opened up by the best player on the pitch. Mexico subbed out Marcel Ruiz, Diego Lainez and Orbelin Pineda for Luis Romo, Hirving Lozano and Erick Sanchez. Luis Suarez got off a right footed shot in the area that went wide. After Diaz slipped in the field conditions and crash into Sanchez, incredibly the referee would judge it as a foul. In the ensuing free kick, the cross into the area was headed back by Erik Lira and into the path of Jefferson Lerma, who got off a right footed volley past Malagon to score and give Colombia the 3-0 lead. It was a bad defensive display but it came off a play where no foul should have been given. Colombia subbed out Luis Diaz and Kevin Serna for Johan Carbonero and Jaminton Campaz. Mexico subbed out Santiago Gimenez and Alexis Vega for German Berterame and Julian Quiñones. Colombia subbed out James Rodriguez and Luis Suarez for Juan Quintero and Rafael Santos Borre. Colombia started the passing the ball around as Mexico fans started to make “Ole” in protest of the terrible result. Jesus Gallardo got off a shot in the area that went well wide. Mexico subbed out Erik Lira for Carlos Rodriguez. After a good combination play, it looked like Lozano was brought down in the area but nothing was given in another bad call. Another quick counter ended with Lozano getting off a weak shot in the area that went right to Ospina. Colombia subbed out Jefferson Lerma and Kevin Castaño for Richard Rios and Juan Portilla. A long ball into the area was won by Johan Carbonero, who got off a low shot past Malagon (who did terrible in the play) and into the net to score and give Colombia the 4-0 lead. It was a bad goal for Mexico to give especially on Malagon, who had a very poor match. After getting the ball in the area, Rodriguez got off a right footed shot that went well wide. A cross into the area was well lowered by Berterame, who got off a right footed shot that hit the post and went out. It was the final play as the half ended with a great win for Colombia and a disastrous result for Mexico.

October 11th, 2025 is going to go down as a dark day in Mexican football. Earlier in the day, Mexico’s run in the 2025 U20 World Cup came to an end by losing against Argentina by a 2-0 score. Argentina was the better side and increased their dominance over Mexico over a new category, as it was the first time they ever eliminated Mexico from a U20 World Cup. Later on, Mexico got a terrible 4-0 loss against Colombia. While the score flattered Colombia, they were the deserved winners and a 2-0 score would have been the fair result. Once again Mexico’s defensive troubles returned, especially at goalkeeping. After Raul Rangel had an average match against South Korea, Malagon had a flat out bad match against Colombia. Mexico’s defending in set plays also let to two goals although their haven’t been said that it was helped by a terrible referee decision on the third goal. Mexico will have to improve fast and will have an equally tough hurdle against Ecuador on Tuesday in Guadalajara. With the better defending by Ecuador, Mexico will have a tougher time on offense, when they already did so against Colombia. The situation doesn’t look favorable and Mexico, after some good results, looks like they are in going into a semi crisis just months before the World Cup.
