What is the story about?

After amuch-needed victory on Tuesday night to snap a 10-game losing streak at Coors Field, the Colorado Rockies will aim for a series victory today. Unfortunately, they face a pair of obstacles that will make that task difficult: a left-hander on the mound for the Orioles and a bad record in rubber matches.

Tomoyuki Sugano (12-8, 5.23 ERA) starts for the Rockies against his former team. Sugano made 30 starts for the Orioles last season, posting a 4.64 ERA in 157 innings. August was a tough month

for Sugano, particularly over his last three starts. In 12 innings, he has allowed 18 runs on 26 hits, including six runs on 10 hits against the Atlanta Braves last weekend. The main issue has been efficiency for the veteran righty, as he has been working behind in counts and relying too heavily on his fastball. His secondary pitches haven’t been working, and opposing teams have punished his mistakes and made him labor. The Rockies need Sugano to flip the script and get ahead in counts and go back to doing what he’s done well all season.

Trevor Rogers (9-9, 4.38 ERA) takes the hill for the O’s. After a slower start to the season, Rogers has mostly been excellent since the start of June. He came back down to earth in August, but still had three quality starts. His last outing was in St. Louis, where he allowed six runs on seven hits over five innings of work. Rogers gave up a home run in each of his five starts last month, but that was about all the damage he surrendered. He has excellent strikeout capabilities and doesn’t generally walk many batters. Keep an eye on his changeup, as that pitch has proven to be a tough one for the Rockies lineup when thrown properly.
