On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is a complete disaster and 10 is as close to perfect as possible, how would you rate Germany’s group stage at the 2026 World Cup?
There is a strong case that Julian Nagelsmann’s side deserves at least an 8 or 9.
Germany opened the tournament with an emphatic 7-1 victory over Curaçao, sending a clear message that they intended to be one of the competition’s most dangerous teams. The attack looked fluid, the pressing was relentless, and confidence was sky-high after such
a dominant opening performance.
The second match proved to be a much tougher challenge, but Germany showed another side of its game by grinding out a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast. While not nearly as spectacular, it demonstrated resilience and an ability to find results even when everything was not clicking offensively.
The only blemish came in the final group match, a 2-1 defeat to Ecuador. Germany had already put itself in an excellent position to advance, but the loss exposed a few concerns. Defensive lapses and a lack of sharpness in front of goal gave Nagelsmann plenty to think about before the knockout rounds.
Still, perspective is important. Germany finished the group stage with two wins, one loss, six points, and qualification for the Round of 32. Scoring 10 goals across three matches while facing different styles of opponents is no small achievement. The team also showed that it can both overwhelm weaker opponents and battle through tighter contests.
There are certainly areas that need improvement. Many supporters continue to debate Nagelsmann’s lineup choices, particularly his continued faith in Leroy Sané and his reluctance to give Deniz Undav a starting role. Those discussions are unlikely to disappear after the Ecuador defeat.
But Germany accomplished its primary objective: advancing to the knockout stage with momentum still largely on its side.
So what is your score? Is Germany winning the group worthy of a 10/10, or did the loss to Ecuador and an uneven effort vs. Ivory Coast drop them down a level? Tell us in the comments below!
