Other Giant observations
Giants headache: After missteps, high-stakes coaching search looms — with doubt and intrigue | NJ.com
How much will the continued presence of general manager Joe Schoen — who is leading this search while Mara battles cancer — impact the job’s desirability among top-end
candidates? What sort of coach should the Giants hire? And this time around, how important is an established track record as a winning head coach?
Ultimately, Schoen is “going to hire someone that is not going to be a threat to his existence,” said a person familiar with NFL coaching searches. “Frankly, I’m not sure you can even blame somebody for that. Everybody has some sense of self-protectiveness who is making these kinds of decisions.”
Mike Kafka on setting the standard
After firing Brian Daboll, Giants’ housecleaning must extend to draft busts on roster | The Athletic
But the housecleaning shouldn’t stop there. It’s time for the Giants to shed dead weight from their roster. It was defensible to hold onto wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, offensive lineman Evan Neal and cornerback Deonte Banks until the trade deadline. But now that the deadline has passed, no value can be recouped for that trio of draft busts.
There’s no excuse for the Giants to compromise an already weak roster by carrying players who don’t contribute (Hyatt and Neal) or continuing to play Banks, who has been a detriment.
What Giants Are Getting in New Offensive Coordinator Tim Kelly | SI.com
Tight end Daniel Bellinger, who knows Kelly as well as anyone, given how they work together daily, thinks his position coach will make an excellent offensive coordinator for Kafka and the Giants.
“He brings a lot of stability,” Belliner said. “You know, he’s been in this before; he is kind of seen, been in OC before, and kind of knows the nuances of it. He brought that to our room over the last couple of years, and we’re really comfortable with how he explains things, how he kind of goes through and sees the defenses, and sees how we can run our offense. So we feel really comfortable with him, really confident in him as a coach.”
Mike Kafka’s new Giants challenge comes with defensive crash course | New York Post
In other words, Kafka, in his audition to be a head coach, isn’t acting like he is only responsible for one side of the ball.
“From an operation standpoint, he’ll bring his presence around. He’s there,” linebacker Bobby Okereke said. “He’s making sure guys’ communication is up to par. He’s making sure, pre-snap, our huddle operation is great, and if it’s not, he’s having us to do it over. He’s kind of just stamping standards and benchmarks we need to make.”

The Giants won’t have much time to get things in order and make drastic changes after firing coach Brian Daboll on Monday. “You’ve got about 10 minutes and the rest of the league doesn’t really care,” tight ends coach and newly appointed offensive coordinator Tim Kelly said. Interim coach Mike Kafka and defensive coordinator Shane Bowen spent time this week trying to figure out the team’s fourth-quarter woes. They better fix them quickly; Green Bay’s 103 points in the fourth quarter are more than double what it has scored in any other quarter this season.
Time for NY Giants to make Abdul Carter’s rookie breakout a priority | The Record
It’s time to unleash Abdul Carter.
With all the change that continues to unfold for the New York Giants in what has become a lost season, this remains a must for the short term (and the future, obviously): Do not allow Carter to fade into the background for the remainder of his rookie season.

New York Giants EDGE Brian Burns vs. Green Bay Packers T Zach Tom. As Green Bay’s maligned offense looks to right the course, the Giants’ ferocious defensive line lurks on the other side. As has been commonplace, Burns has played like a well-above-average edge defender this season. His 76.9 PFF pass-rushing grade is 17th among qualifiers, although his 9.1% pass-rush win rate is in the 27th percentile.
Tom was sidelined with a back injury, but he’s been a steadying presence when on the field. His 81.4 overall PFF grade is eighth among tackles to play 340 or more snaps, producing a 75.1 grade in both pass- and run-blocking. The Giants’ edge rotation is deep with Burns, Abdul Carter and Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Tom will bear witness to all three. Yet with Burns leading the team in snaps facing the left tackle (210), that means that two underrated standouts will spar on Sunday.
Jaxson Dart returned to the practice field yesterday
New York Giants prep Younghoe Koo in MetLife Stadium for expected windy conditions | USAToday.com
New York Giants special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial revealed Thursday that the team brought kicker Younghoe Koo to MetLife Stadium for practice amid gusty conditions, gearing up for a blustery Week 11 clash with the Green Bay Packers. Sunday’s forecast calls for sustained winds of 18 MPH and gusts upwards of 45 MPH. The decision to bring Koo to the stadium for practice underscores venue-specific preparation.
“There’s something to be said about the depth perception when you’re in that stadium. The backdrop is different. So, feeling how far a 45-yard field goal, a 52-yard field goal feels different out here than it does in the stadium, just based off of the way the bleachers are set,” Ghobrial said. “But obviously, this being your home turf, he wants to make sure that he treats it like his home turf. Any opportunity we get to make him feel comfortable in that stadium, we will.”
10 things to watch in Giants vs. Packers | Giants.com
TE Theo Johnson – Lost in the shuffle of last week’s defeat was the career day from Johnson. The second-year tight end set new career highs with his seven receptions on eight targets for 75 yards. While most of his 33 receptions for 314 yards and five touchdowns this season has come with Dart at QB, Johnson should have plenty of opportunities with Winston under center. Browns tight end David Njoku caught 5+ passes in five of six games he played with Winston at quarterback last year, with a total of four touchdowns in those games. Green Bay has allowed 60 receptions to tight ends this season, tied for the seventh-most, while their five touchdowns to the position are tied for the ninth-most.

New York Giants: Edge Kayvon Thibodeaux When you’ve got as many soft spots as the Giants do and you have three blue-chip-caliber players at one position, there isn’t much of a choice. You can’t part with Brian Burns the way he’s playing, and Abdul Carter isn’t going anywhere. That leaves Thibodeaux ahead of a contract year in 2026. Suitors will surely see the raw talent and upside.

Packers’ Xavier McKinney reflects on time with Giants ahead of MetLife return | SNY.tv
“It taught me a lot,” said McKinney. “Just a lot of different lessons that I learned throughout my time there helped build me into the kind of player — it wasn’t always easy, a lot of ups and downs, difficult times. I went through some life-changing moments while I was in New York, so those are times I definitely won’t ever forget, but it molded me into the player I am today and I’m grateful for that time that I spent there with them.”

Coach Matt LaFleur and his staff spent the week trying to find a solution for their suddenly struggling offense. Maybe they should put the ball in the hands of their $220 million QB a little more instead of trying to run the ball so much. That would be just fine with Jordan Love. “Definitely,” Love said. “As a player you always want that. You always want the pressure to be on you, to be able to get the team out of funks. … You’ve just got to trust the process and take one play at a time. But I love having the ball in my hands at all times, and I love that pressure.”
WR Christian Watson has enjoyed finding football groove again | Packers.com
While Watson (knee/hamstring) was listed on the injury report as a limited participant this week, the 6-foot-4, 208-pound receiver told reporters afterwards he’s not injured and fully expects to play Sunday against the New York Giants.
“They just gotta do what they gotta do,” said Watson regarding the Packers’ injury report. “I’m good. I have no worries in terms of where I’m gonna be at for Sunday. Just precautions, I guess, for them.”
