Worcester Red Sox 3, Buffalo Bisons 3 (Suspended after 9 innings)

Rain hit at Sahlen Field in Buffalo at the most inopportune time, moments after the Bisons tied the game with a run in the bottom of the ninth. In to close the game, Hobie Harris walked four Bisons (TOR) hitters before it started raining. Kristian Campbell stood at the plate with a 1-1 count to start the top of the tenth when the skies opened up, and the game could not resume.
Blake Wehunt started the game and went six innings, allowing one run and striking out
six. At the dish, the Woo Sox had multi-hit games from Franklin Arias, Mikey Romero, Romy Gonzalez, and Vinny Capra. Gonzalez was 4-for-5 with one RBI.
Romy has been on fire in recent weeks after getting the short end of the stick with the big league club. Rushing back from his rehab, Gonzalez was given just 65 at-bats (.185 BA) before his demotion. He deserves another shot this season, but it will be tough to find a spot for him with an already crowded infield, which just got more crowded with the return of Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and with Curtis Mead possibly returning later this month. Gonzalez is 9-for-14 in the past three games and is slashing .371/.423/.557 since returning to Worcester on August 7th, with three home runs and 16 RBI.
Tonight’s game will restart at 5:05 PM before the regularly scheduled game to follow. John Holobetz (1-4, 5.47) will throw in that one.
Portland Sea Dogs 5, Chesapeake Baysox 4 (BOX)
The Sea Dogs made a late-inning comeback on the road last night, scoring two runs in the seventh and a run in each of the final two innings to pull out the 5-4 win.
Brooks Brannon got the scoring started for Portland with his 21st home run in the second inning, off Baysox (BAL) starter Anthony Eyanson. It was Eyanson’s only blemish, striking out eight over six innings.
Once Eyanson was out of the game, Henry Godbout and Max Ferguson hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning. After a Justin Gonzales sac fly tied it, Godbout came up again to hit the game-winner, his seventh home run since being promoted to Double-A.
On the mound, when’s the last time you’ve seen a line like this?
Futrell “scattered” 13 hits and ended up with a no decision. Max Carlson got the win and Caleb Bolden the save, combining for three shutout innings.
Michael Sansone (3-3, 5.36) will get the ball Friday at 7:05.
Bowling Green Hot Rods 7, Greenville Drive 6 (BOX)
Dylan Brown started against the Hot Rods (TB) on Thursday and while the results weren’t elite, he continued his stretch of excellent command, striking out 8 and walking nobody. He has a 46:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his past seven starts (3.09 ERA). He left with a no decision, allowing three runs over 5 ⅓ innings.
Ronny Hernandez, Givian Sirvania, and Nazzan Zanetello all homered for the Drive, with Zanetello dropping a two-run shot to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning.
Unfortunately, Matt McShane gave up a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to Tony Santa Maria, his second of the night. What a shame that Matt Vasgersian couldn’t be on the call for that one.
Yordanny Monegro (0-0, 0.00) makes his second start since returning from Tommy John on Thursday at 7:35.
Hill City Howlers 1, Salem RidgeYaks 0 (BOX)
Starter Cole Tolbert was dealing on Thursday, getting through 5 ⅓ shutout innings on 63 pitches. He couldn’t get the win as the offense didn’t show up, as they were shutout on six hits. Franklin Primera had the lone multi-hit effort, improving his average to .327 at Low-A.
Cam Padgett (0-0, 4.22) will be on the bump at 6:35 Friday.
