What a comeback once again from Argentina. The South American side has clearly made a deal with the devil for their ability to upset the opposition late in these knockout matches. It has truly been a unique finals run when you consider just how little time it has led in their knockout matches.
Losing team jersey swap: Anthony Gordon
The newly minted FC Barcelona attacker had a massive goal to open the game for England. While it might look like a simple finish to casual observers, Gordon showed great ability to guide the ball on such a tough
angle. While it wasn’t enough to win for England, he did his job.
Der Kaiser: Cristian Romero
The Tottenham defender is the leader of this Argentinian backline for good reason. He put in a strong performance to keep a very strong English attach and midfield at bay. Silencing Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Co. is no simple task but he did his job excellently.
Fußballgott: Enzo Fernández
The Chelsea superstar was nearly the pick for Meister of the Match, just narrowily losing out to the eventual winner, but I went back and forth between two choices for a long time deciding the winner. Fernández had a brilliant match both in his build-up play but also his goal that inspired the Argentina comeback. While Pickford should have done better, it doesn’t take away from his strike.
Der Bomber: Lautaro Martínez
The definition of a supersub. When you have someone of this quality coming off the bench, you knew it meant trouble for England and that is exactly what happened. His game winner will live on in history for his team, and just shows why Argentina always finds a way to win these games.
Meister of the Match: Lionel Messi
The greatest of all time with another all-time great performance. You knew Messi was never coming off the pitch for as long as this game went, but his heroics saved the tournament for his side and while he has been known for his scoring in this tournament, he is still one of the best distributors in the game. Love him or hate him, you watched.
