Alvaro Benito admitted he has doubts about Real Madrid’s chances ahead of their Champions League clash with Manchester City.
Speaking on El Larguero on Cadena SER, the former Madrid player explained that in previous seasons the team consistently found ways to turn difficult ties around. This year, however, he sees a different scenario due to injuries and the current level of the squad.
“Real Madrid lately had accustomed us to the idea that their regularity didn’t really tell you anything. I mean, then
the Champions League would arrive and suddenly they could perform well and bring out their best version through an exercise of enormous resilience.”
But Benito believes the context now is more complicated.
“There are many doubts about the level of the team right now, both individually and collectively, and there are also many absences.”
He outlined the difference a fully fit squad would make.
“I imagine a Real Madrid with Carvajal in good shape, Militão in good shape, Rüdiger in good shape, Bellingham at a good level, Rodrygo at a good level, with Vinicius and with Mbappé being Mbappé… and you can look any team in the eye.”
However, that is not the current reality.
“I want to think Real Madrid can hold onto the tie… but this time I have a lot of uncertainty. I think this feeling of uncertainty that I have is probably shared by everyone.”
