The new 2025 college football season is close. The Virginia Tech Hokies kick off the new season in less than two weeks when they face the 13th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks in Atlanta.
On Tuesday, the Hokies named five captains for the upcoming season:
- QB Kyron Drones
- TE Benji Gosnell
- DT Kelvin Gilliam
- LB Caleb Woodson
- K John Love
No surprise to see Drones on this list. He’s in his fifth college season, including his third at Virginia
Tech. After a promising debut season with the Hokies in 2023, injuries ruined Drones’ 2024 season and plagued him into the offseason. He’s been healthy this summer and has enjoyed a strong fall camp.
Gosnell, a redshirt junior originally from Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, has enjoyed a successful college career and is one of the ACC’s top tight ends in 2025. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Gosnell lead the Hokies in receiving for 2025.
Gilliam, a fifth-year senior from Highland Springs, Virginia, began his career at Oklahoma, but transferred to the Hokies before last season. Gilliam played in all 13 games last season, making six starts. He will start this season as he looks to finish his college career on a strong note.
Woodson is a 6-foot-3, 230-pound junior linebacker from Haymarket, Virginia. He was one of Tech’s best defensive players last season and has continued to add size. He looks poised for a massive season in new defensive coordinator Sam Siefkes’ defense.
Love, a redshirt junior from Spartanburg, South Carolina, is one of the nation’s top kickers. A two-time All-ACC honorable mention selection, Love made 16 of his 18 field-goal attempts last season, going 5-5 from 40-49 yards and 3-4 from 50 and beyond. He established a new school record by drilling a 60-yard field goal against Minnesota in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
Congratulations to each of these five Hokies on being named 2025 captains.
